The World of the 20th Century

The 20th century has brought a lot of radical changes to all countries of the world. These involve the economy, industry, borders of countries, political conditions and the overall ideology of the people. Right up to the present, the world has been developing and bringing about new things – new technologies in industry, science and technical discoveries, new knowledge etc. – that have had both positive and a negative influence on people’s lives.

In the 20th century several important historical events have taken place.

Of course we can’t mention all of them. It’s good to know at least about the most important and decisive ones in politics and the sciences. In 1901 Australia became a part of the Commonwealth of Nations. In the same year blood groups were recognized for the first time. A technique of removing tumors from the brain was explored. In 1940 a revolution broke out in Mexico. Sigmund Freud‘ theory of psychonanalysis originated. In 1912 the Balkan nations national liberation movement culminated. Albania celebrated its independence and the American army entered Cuba.

The year 1914 was a somewhat fearsome date. The World War I. broke out that year. Many battles took place (for example at the Marne River), at the end of the year Belgrade fell. One year later the German submarine war started. In 1916 the first tanks were built by the Great Britain. In 1917 the USA joined that war and in Russia the October Revolution broke out.

The year 1918 brought a lot of changes and events: the end of war; the desintegration of Austria-Hungary and the independence of new states – Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and Yugoslavia. In 1933 fascism came to power in Germany along with Adolf Hitler.

The World War II. lasted for more than 6 years. It ended on September 2nd, 1945. On May 8th, 1945 Germany signed its capitulations. Germany split into two separate countries after the war ended. The Berlin Wall was the symbol of its division. Many people lost their lives during both world wars. Cities were destroyed and villages burnt.

In 1947
India and Pakistan became independent countries. In Czechoslovakia a putsch took place on February, 25th, 1948. The Western European Union was formed and the Berlin blockade was underway. In 1949 RVHP was formed. Two new German states came into being. – FRG and GDR. The Chinese People’s Republic came into being. NATO was established. The first man flew to outer space – it was Russian astronaut J. Gagarin. About two years later the American president J. F. Kennedy war murdered.

In 1989 a new era began for a lot of socialist countries, democratic changes occurred in GDR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. Germany was reunited and the wall in Berlin was demolished in 1990. Irag attacked Kuwait. In 1991 the Warsaw pact, RVHP and the USSR were dissolved. Kuwait was liberated. The war between Serbs and Albanians seemed endless.
