My family stay in a house on Prague suburb. Most of my friends look down on living “out of town”. Yes, living in a village has many disadvantages - lack of shopping opportunities and cultural activities, long journey to school or work and of course everyone knows everything about everybody. My village is only 3 km from the city, so it’s really no problem to go to the cinema, the swimming pool or football stadium and this summer will be built the underground in Kobylisy, so the service with the inner city will be more comfortable. In our village we have cultural house, elementary school, health centre, football field, several small shops and restaurants and of course a chapel. In the cultural house there is a small gym, a library and you can play table tennis here.

Many people prefer to live in the city.
The city, however, has its own disadvantages, such as the hectic atmosphere created by stress, traffic and noise. There is polluted air and often you have to live in apartment blocks. Furthermore, the parks and playgrounds are far and few between. The positive aspects of living in a city are the job opportunities, the housing options, the wide variety of cultural and sport activities, the number of shops and the high quality medical facilities. Everyone has to decide for themselves where they want to live. Personally, I prefer to live on a suburb. When I want to go to the cinema, a concert, a disco or just go shopping, then I take a trip to the downtown.

Now I will describe our house.
It has large garden and a garage and is located at edge of the village. There are four rooms in our house. We have a living room, two bedrooms and a cabinet and of course, there is the kitchen, the bathroom, the toilet and a corridor. All of the rooms are big; the only small room is the one my parents use as an office. Underneath the house there is a basement where we store fruit, jams and stewed fruit.

When you come into the house, you must at first pass through our porch to the living room. There is one big window, many cases and big stove. In front part of flat there is also kitchen with many cupboards, washer and cooker and small bathroom with a toilet. The kitchen is connected with two bedrooms and parent’s office by long corridor.

In Britain there are lots of terraced houses and semidetached houses everywhere and it makes a fine show. It’s beautiful when there aren’t any huge blocks of flats. English prefer small base houses to blocks of flats and it looks better in my opinion. Houses are made of red bricks or concrete, stone and wood, somewhere we can still find half-timbered houses with thatched roofs. The houses have usually 4 - 6 rooms, two floors and small front and back gardens and are either semidetached - joined to another house on one side or detached - joined on both sides. On the ground floor there are a hall, kitchen, living room often with a fireplace and on the first floor there are bedrooms and bathroom.

In my opinion every country, every government has its problems with housing. In our country there are a lot of displaced persons who live anywhere they can. For example, under bridges or they sleep at stations. But there are also people who haven’t any flat because there aren’t enough chances for living in flats because they are very expensive especially for young couple. Some countries have problems with an earthquake which destroyed a lot of houses and then people have no choice, they must leave their houses. It is the same with floods.

Americans are a mobile nation. The average owner stays in a house only few years, before moving somewhere else. Due to low interest rates, the majority of families in the USA have their own homes. Usually these are separate houses with yards. Houses in USA are still very inexpensive compared to Europe. There is a dark side to families moving so much, and such distances. Family link are not so strong. Some parents and grown children living on opposite coasts and can visit each other only from time to time.

Groups of owned apartments in one building are not as popular as in the rest of the world. Usually they are common only in downtown areas. They are popular with people who want to buy their own home but don’t want to maintain a yard or a garden. Condominiums often have a lot of communal amenities, such as laundry room, swimming pools and fitness rooms. Young people, especially when they are single, normally can’t afford to buy a house or a condo right away. They usually live in rented apartments. There are apartments in older buildings, especially in big cities, but there are also a lot of modern apartment complexes. These apartments are almost always furnished, usually very nicely.

Houses vary greatly, but the dominant style of the last 30 years has been the ranch-style house. Houses are usually made of wood and built by carpenters. In the southern states, where wood is scarcer, brick and stucco houses are much more common than in the northern states. Modern stucco houses are often built in a Mexican style. Victorian houses are painted in bright colours, especially blue.

The flat of my dreams is small bright flat situated on the last floor of high apartment building with brilliant view of the city or small cottage ashore the lake in middle of deep forest. But this is just a dream, in fact I’ll be happy, when I’ll be once able to build my own house, because nowadays it’s a big problem.
