Food

People live in various conditions, which influence the food they eat. People living in colder countries need to eat more fatty products and foods which give them a lot of energy. People living in hot countries need to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables to give their body enough energy and liquids. We have different habit too.  We usually have 5 meals a day: breakfast, midmorning snack, dinner, afternoon snack and supper.

- Eating habits inSlovakia and Great Britain...

Slovakia
In our country daily meals usually start with breakfast, which consists of something to drink – tea (with lemon) or cocoa, warm milk, black coffee, - and something to eat, e.g. one or two slices or bread and butter and cheese or eggs, ham salami, jam etc. Instead of bread we can eat rolls or buns or we can have something sweet – cakes (Christmas cake), doughnuts or gingerbread. Quite a lot of people eat cereal for their breakfast – either cornflakes or muesli. Breakfast usually takes place between six and seven o’clock.

Midmorning snack is eaten usually at schools or at work. Around ten o’clock we eat different kinds of packet sandwiches made at home, or it can be a fruit, sweets, biscuits, waffles, tea in bottle, juice, fizzy drinks or a cup of tea.
Dinner is ussauly aeten between 12-2pm. It’s main meal of the day. This meal is warm and consists or some soup, a main dish, something to drink and salad or dessert. Soups can be vegetable soups potato, tomato, pea, bean, carrot, parsley, celery) or meat or mushrooms. The main dish can be sweet – strawberry or plum dumplings, pancakes with jam and cream, baked yeast dumplings, doughnuts… Or we can have some meat or fish or poultry (chicken, hen, duck, turkey, goose…) with some vegetables, potatoes, chips, rice,. We distinguish this type of meat: beef (cow), pork (pig), veal (calf), mutton (sheep), lamb (baby sheep) and we can prepare it in various ways – roast, grill, boil, bake, or stew. After main dish we may drink tea, lemonade, cider, juice, Coke, mineral water, syrup and water, while the adults like beer and black coffee after their dinner.
In the afternoon we eat fast food, sandwiches, yoghurts, pudding, fruit as a afternoon snack (tea).
Supper can be cold- then it is similar to breakfast or hot- some pasta. For supper people usually have something light like biscuits or cakes and something to drink.
My most favorite meal is spicy bean soup and soya chunks with rice or potatoes and some  vegetables. Ilike sweet meal too. My favourite are pancakes and gnocchi with poppy seeds

Great Britain
People in Britain have got 5 meals a day: breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner.
Traditional British breakfast consists of a glass of fruit juice and cornflakes with sugar and milk. Of course the drink tea in the morning or coffee. Sunday are reserved for their big cooked breakfast (sometimes called “brunch” – breakfast and lunch together) consisting of boiled or scrambled eggs or fried bacon and eggs with perhaps sausage or tomato or fried bread. Most people like a crisp piece of toast with butter and marmalade or honey.
Midmorning snack consists of some fruit or vegetable.
Between twelve and one o’clock is usually lunchtime.  It‘ s a light meal of the day. It isn’t cooked and consists of sandwiches, hot dogs, bread ham, vegetable salad.

Afternoon snack often consists of  some bisquit or vegetables. In past the British used to have five- o’clock tea. They had tea with milk and some bisquits. About six o’clock most families have  dinner. It is the main meal of the day, when the whole family comes home. All members meet at the table, have dinner and communicate.  It may be cooked or cold, depending on the time of year. The cooked food is normally made in microwave oven to spare the time. There is a great choice of read-made frozen food in British shops and they are not very expensive. The English are fond   cakes and pies and ice cream, they have one of this thing after every dinner or lunch or tea.

- Places where people eat...
Most of people go to a school, office or factory canteen but some prefer going to a restaurant or having a fast lunch in a buffet or a snackbar or buying something at street stall.  In food stalls you can buy also various types of food to eat as you walk along the streets or take it away and eat at home. The Americans call fast food restaurants “cheapies”. These place – McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s usually offer beverages as Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, tea, coffee, milkshakes… and eat as roast chicken and chips, hamburgers, sandwiches, pizza, salads or desserts.

- Typical  meals...
British and American lifestyle is popcorn, fasfood, cola.. For Italian kitchen there are typical foods like spaghetti, pizza, tomatoes. For Chinese rice, duck, fish, vegetable and spices. For Germany a soup called “Eintopf”.
SLOVAK CUISINE:
Bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with bryndza - a sheep's-milk cheese)
Lokše (pancakes made of potato-dough baked directly on the stove)
Zemiakové placky (potato pancakes fried in oil)

- Eating habits...
Nowdays people are talking a lot about healthy nutrition. Recent researches proved that a man of today lives an unhealthy life. The present situation is caused by unhealthy food, little excercise, alcohol consuming, smoking. It is very important to think about this problem and try to change our lifestyle in order to begin a better and healthier life.
Many people prefer vegetarianism. Vegetarians are people who don‘ t eat meat or fish. They eat only foods sucha s vegetable, fruit, eggs either for moral reasons ( they don’t like cruel treatment to animals) or beasauce it‘ s healthier. Vegans don‘ t eat even animal products such cheese, milk, eggs.

- Eating for health...
If we want to be healthy we should have balaced diet.  It means  that our meals should contain 5 important things: carbohydrates, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals.
We get energy from complex carbohydrates. These complex should  be the largest part of our meal. Especially, breakfast when u need a lot of energy to strat a day.
Protein comes from meat, fish, cheese, milk and eggs. Vegetarians get a lot of proteins from beans. Protein helps us to built your body. It‘ s very  important for teenager becaue their body is growing. However, meat and cheese contain a lot of fat so don‘ t eat too much of these things.
We get most of our fibre, vitamins  and minerals from vegetables. Unfortunately, teenagers don’t eat enough vegetables and fruit, which has negative influence of their health. Eg. Vitamin C helps our body to fight infections.
Most teenagers diets contain a lot of sugar, bisquit, chocolate and drinks light cola. Sugar isn’t  bad for us, it’s carbohydrate and give us energy. However we shouldn’t eat a lot of it because it contains a lot of callories. If we don’t take enough exercise to use these callories , our body stores them as a fat.
