He was born in1899 in USA in doctor's family. After high school he worked as a newspaper reporter and then went to Europe to take part in World War I. After the war he lived in Paris where he met a group of artists who felt alienated from their country. Then he started writing short stories. The subjects were often war and it’s effects on people.
His style of writing is striking. He used short sentences, his words were simple, but filled with emotion. His first book in the line of fiction is Three Stories and Ten Poems. There were many books to follow his debut. The Sun Also Rises is about a group of English and American people who travel across Europe seeking an escape from their terrible disillusionment brought on by the war. A farewell to arms contains a love story of an American ambulance driver and an English nurse.
Hemingway turned to other subjects in Men without Women, Green Hills of Africa, The Fifth Column, Fiesta, Death in the Afternoon and many others. His well-known novel For Whom the Bell Tolls tells a story of Robert Jordan who fought in the Spanish Civil War. The whole book is about a single mission: blowing up a bridge, so that the enemy couldn’t use it. The mission is successful but many people are wounded or killed. The Old Man and the Sea, published in 1952, brought him the Nobel Prize in 1954 and it was screened subsequently. Hemingway died in a gunaccident, at his home in 1961.
