History
The first inhabitants were Celts in 6th century BC.
In 1st century AD Roman occupation started. They built towns, roads, but in the 5th century AD(anno domine) Roman army was needed at home so they left Britis Isles.
Then Germanic tribes of Angles, Saxons, Jutes arrived to British Isles.
1066 – William the Conqueror invaded the country and became the King of England. Hegemony of Normans began.
 
Two important wars in the history of GB are: (14th century)
1.One houndred years war – the war between England and France
2.War of Roses – the war of English throne between the House of Yorks and house of Lancaster. The winner was Henrych Tudor and he established Tudor Dinasty. Henrych Tudor VIII is famous, becouse he had 6 wives.
 
17th century – Civil war between King and Parliament. This war ended with defeat of the King and Oliver Cromwell become Lord Protector.
18th century – Industrial Revolution
19th century – reign of Queen Victoria
 
Present sovereign is Queen Elizabeth II.
 
Geography Location: GB is situated on the British Isles lying off northwest coast of Europe.
Boundary: neighbours are Ireland and France. GB is separeted from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The Irish sea and North Channel separate GB from Ireland.
Population: of GB is more than 56 million people. It is one of the most densely populated country in the world.
Mountains: The highest mountains are The Highlands of Scotland with the highest peak Ben Nevis.
The main mountain regions are the Cornish Heights, the Pennines and The Cheviot Hills in England, The Cumbrian mountains in Wales.
Rivers: The longest rivers are the Severn and the Thames.
Lakes: The most famous lakes are Loch Lomond and Loch Ness in Scotland where the mythical monster lives.
Climate: country has a mild and rainy climate, determined by the warm current of the Gulf Stream. Rain is regularly distributed throughout the year. Everage temperature is 16 degrees Celsius.
 
The system of Government GB is a constitutional monarchy. The present sovereign is Queen Elizabeth II, but in fact she has no real political power. The power is the Cabinet, consisting of about twenty ministers an the head is Prime Minister Tony Bleer.
The supreme legislative body is Parliament. It consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

The national economy The main industries are steel, metals, vehicles, shipbuilding, shipping, banking, insurance, textiles, chemicals, electronics, aircraft, machinery.
The main agricultural products are grains, sugar beet, fruit, vegetables.
Britian´s natural riches are coal, oil, gas, iron and salt.
England – London It is highly industrialized. The most famous cities are Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Brighton. The biggest growth has been in banking, insurance, finance and advertising.
Oxford and Cambridge are the old university towns
The most beautiful natural scenery can be seen in the north-west of England in the Lake Districrt. (47 million inhabitants)
 
Wales – Cardiff It is largely mountains country on the west of GB. The highest mountain in the north is Snowdon. This region is called Snowdonia.
Wales is famous for its long rivers, big lakes and high hills.
The whole area of Wales can be divided into three regions: the Welsh Massif, Settlements, Snowdonia.
There are 2 languages spoken in Wales – English and Welsh. Wales is rich in culture and history.(2,8 million people)
 
Scotland -  Edinburgh Scotland has its own legal and educational system and currency(the value is the same but banknotes have different design).
It is situated to the north of England, also includes Orkneys, Shetlands, Hebrides end other islands. Scottish people speak English and Gaelic (ancient Scottish language).
The most beautiful part of Scotland is the region Highlands. Lakes are Loch Lomond and Loch Ness where the mythical monster lives.
Big cities are Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.
There are special traditions such as playing bagpipes and wearing kilts – typical pleated knee-lenght  tartan skirts. Special meal is haggis (made of heart, liver, lungs of sheep, onions, spices, salt boild in stomach of sheep). Scottish whisky is world-famous. (5 million people)
 
Nothern Ireland – Belfast It occupies the northern fifth of Ireland. They speak English. Belfast is the shopping, educational, commercial, entertainment, and service centre of Nothern Ireland.
In Northern Ireland are small farms producing pigs, cattle, milk and eggs.
It is almost totally Catholic. The life of people and the politics are dominated by religious and economic problems.
 
London
It is capital city of GB. It consists of three main parts: The City, Westminster, West End

Interesting places The City: is the oldest part.
The Tower – It was a fortress, Royal Palace and prison. Now it is a museum of arms and you can find there crown jewels. In the Tower you can find many quides in typical Tudor´s costums – Beefeater. There is a lot of Ravens.
Tower Bridge – can open in the middle and let big ships go throw.
St. Paul´s Cathedral – the biggest cathedral in the world. It is the work of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren.
 
Westminster: is full of sightseeings.
The Houses of Parliament – there are the seat of British government.
10, Downing Street – is the official home of British Prime Minister – Tony Bleer.
Westminster Abbey – almost all English Kings and Queens were crowned there.
Buckingham Palace – it is seat of the Queen. One of the biggest London´s parades is Changing the Guard here.
 
West End: is for entertainment.
Piccadilly Circus – is a square with a statue of the Eros in the middle. Usually young people meet there and sit on the stairs.
Trafalgar Square – in the middle is statue of Admiral Nelson. It is very popular place for meetings and demonstrations.
Museum Madame Tussaud´s – museum of wax figures
 
There are many parks in London, but the most famous is Hyde Park. There is speaker´s Corner. It is place where you can talk about everythink except a Royal family.
China town – very popular place with many goof chinesse restaurants.
