The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated in west Europe on two islands: the island of Great Britain and in the northern part of the island of Ireland. The UK is made up of four countries: Wales with capital city Cardiff, Scotland with capital city Edinburg, Northern Ireland with capital city Belfast and England with capital city London, which is also the capital city of the UK.

The population of the UK is more than 60 million, taking into account emigration and immigration. There live English, Welsh, Scots, the Irish, Jews and lots of immigrants like Africans. The official language is English but other languages like welsh and Scottish are in use.

The UK doesn’t have special holidays apart from Christmas, New Year and Easter. There are single day ‘bank holidays’ in May and August.

The country has a temperate climate and is famous for its wet weather. The landscape of England is mostly hilly. The countryside is very green. There are many fields and pastures. The north is more mountainous, especially in Scotland where you will find the Highlands. The longest river in the United Kingdom is the Severn. The Thames, which flows through London, is the second longest. Loch Ness in Scotland is the largest lake by volume. The largest lake by area is Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy. The head of country is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen has many important formal duties but in most cases follows the advice of the Prime Minister. The prime minister in these days is David Cameron. The prime minister traditionally lives at 10 Downing Street. There is also a Parliament too. The parliament consists of the House of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. There are two main political parties in the United Kingdom: the Conservative Party, which is traditionally centre-right, and the Labour Party, traditionally more left-wing. The third largest party is the Liberal Democrats.

Saint George is the patron saint of England. Robin Hood is a heroic outlaw in English folklore. Informally, the national flag of the United Kingdom is called the Union Jack.

Famous people from the United Kingdom include William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, the Beatles, who are one of the most popular pop groups of all time, Charles Dickens. The United Kingdom is also famous for many fictitious characters such as the spy James Bond, the detective Sherlock Holmes and the boy wizard Harry Potter.

British people like playing football, cricket in the summer, rugby, polo, watching horse‑racing, seeing pantomimes at Christmas time, going to the local pub for a pint, doing DIY. In the past, Fox hunting was very popular.
