The Olympic Games is a major international event featuring summer and winter sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games have come to be regarded as the world’s foremost sports competition where more than 200 nations participate. The Games are currently held every four years, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. Since 2008, host cities are contracted to manage both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games, where athletes who have a physical disability compete. The Paralympics are held immediately following their respective Olympic Games. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.

The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes

NHL - The National Hockey League is an unincorporated not-for-profit association which operates a major professional ice hockey league of 30 franchised member clubs, of which 7 are currently located in Canada and 23 in the United States. Headquartered in New York City, the NHL is widely considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues of the United States and Canada.

The league was organized on November 26, 1917, in Montreal, Canada, during World War I after the suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which had been founded in 1909. It started with four teams and, through a series of expansions, contractions, and relocations, the league is now composed of 30 active franchises. After a labour dispute that led to the cancellation of the entire 2004–05 season, the league resumed play under a new collective bargaining agreement that included a salary cap. In 2009, the NHL enjoyed record highs in terms of sponsorships, crowds and television audiences.

Negative Effects of Alcohol in Sport

Although widely used as well as being considered socially acceptable, alcohol is still a drug and so will affect your body and your behaviour. The behavioural problems associated with alcohol consumption include but are not limited to: disinhibition, aggression, intolerance and rowdiness. None of these behaviours are conducive to a successful performance in sports.

Doping in sport is not a new phenomenon. Athletes face a difficult choice whether to use drugs to enhance their performance or to take the risk of suffering from severe side effects. Doping not only contravenes the spirit of fair competition, it can be seriously detrimental to health. In the early 1900s, the most popular doping agent was a cocktail of alcohol and strychnine. Methods of anti-doping control were first pioneered in the 1960s, by Arnold Beckett. Steroids should be banned from sports because of the negative history in competitions, the health risks involved, and the disgrace it brings to many sports. Before trying to prove that steroids serve no positive role in sport, it would be beneficial to outline the history of the drug used in sports. In the early 1950's, athletes in eastern European were already using crude forms of testosterone injections to increase their power.

Sport vs. game

A game involves more than one person and a sport pertains to only an individual’s skills and performance.

A physical activity, Sport is carried out under an agreed set of rules. Sport is related to recreational purpose, either for self-enjoyment or competition or for both. A game is also for recreational activities and it involves one or more players. Played on the basis of a set of rules, a game is defined as a goal that the players try to achieve. As like sport, game is also played for enjoyment.

Sport is an activity or activities where the material capabilities of the sportsperson are looked upon. In a sport, it is the sportsperson or the individual who determines the outcome. Well, an individual’s talent does not determine a game. It is the entire performance of the players that determines the winner in a game. An individual’s skill or performance, though has much significance, does not count much in a game; it is only the coordination and team spirit that leads the game. A person participating in a sport is called as athlete or a sports person. A person who participates in a game is known as player. While a game relies on strategy, sport is based on individual performances and luck. We can compare individual and collective sports to sports and respectively games.

Fair play is controlled by referees (football, rugby, etc.) or umpires (tennis, cricket, etc.). Some players try to be winners by breaking the rules in a game which they are usually punished for. Some of them, mainly boys and men, use special drugs – steroids and stimulants. They help them build up their muscles and look good in bodybuilders’ competitions. But these drugs cause a lot of health problems – aggression, cancer, heart attack or infertility. All these drugs are prohibited in sport competitions and sportsmen are tested on them. A good performance is supposed to be rewarded by scoring points or goals.

And what about my experience with sports? When I was much younger, I learned swimming, cycling, skating... In school we have physical training lessons twice a week. There we practice almost all kinds of sport. We have very big gym, which is also very good equipped. In my free time I use to play volleyball with my friends or I go jogging in the evening and in winter I try to ski as often as possible. I like to watch some sports on TV – e.g. ice-hockey matches, figure skating or athletics competitions.

Competitive eating

This is probably my most favourite sport. Although I don’t actively watch any kind of sport, this is something I can totally relate to. I like good food and I like cooking it. My hero is Adam Richman from TV series Man vs. Food. In these series he is travelling around the world and tasting, competing and trying to take part in every local food challenge he encounters. He isn’t the best eater out there, but you can feel the enthusiasm. The target of the competitions are usually to eat some amount of food (large or hard to eat food usually) in some amount of time. Sometimes the timeframe isn’t even needed, because the amount is too large or really hard to eat (spicy, sour…)

Sports locally

In my country these sport games are popular: football, ice-hockey, cycling, volleyball, tennis and so on. In summer volleyball and football are popular. Especially football is popular because many people play it in their free time and you don’t need to have expensive equipment. In winter ice-hockey, skating and snowboarding are popular because we have long winters. Ice-hockey is very popular in Slovakia and it has many fans. We have many excellent ice-hockey players who are successful in Slovakia and also in the world. Our hockey players won a gold medal and also the international cup in the past.

Sport globally

People usually say, that sporting is good for both your physical and psychical health, but only if you are doing it recreationally. Most famous professional sportsmen and sportswomen are usually in very bad psychical condition by my standards. Sometimes it is the fame, sometimes money, maybe too much pressure, that people are starting to wither from inside, both with substance usage and psychical degradation. I do not approve any of the sports of competitions which are allowing or indirectly allowing or not preventing usage of harmful physical boosting drugs or psychical boosting drugs like Adderall. Chase for ultimate fame is one of the reason of this malicious way of thinking.

But sports are great, they are giving form and fun to a physical training. People can socialize, make memories and have a good time while exercising, that’s something incredible. Although many people are living life with almost no physical exercising “thanks” to the internet age. People are watching the sports rather than conducting them themselves. That’s really a shame, sports were meant to be played, not watched. I don’t see what other people are seeing, so this is subjective, but those “superstars” people are praising aren’t worthy of the money, fame and fandom.

Types of sports

We can categorize sports to many different categories. For example, based on seasons, location, attractivity, recreational/professional purposes, etc.
