Problems of drugs and alcoholism
In the1960s, experts say, drugs were popular because society was changing very fast. And today? Aren’t musicians and movie stars using drugs today,
and influencing teenagers? Certainly, these early years of the 21st century are a time of change, too.
Parents often complain that their
children drink, but it is true that many of the young people are introduced to alcohol at home. Some parents think there’s nothing wrong with
drinking 5 or 6 beers or getting drunk. A lot of abusers have alcoholic parents. That’s where many of the problems start. Nowadays young people
have more money. Some of them are given money by their parents and the others take some temporary job. Young people cannot imagine the entertainment,
discotheque without alcohol. Press, cinema and TV advertisements give the impression that people who drink are successful, make
friends easily and enjoy themselves. Many young people aren’t interested in anything. They are bored and so they drink alcohol and even use drugs.
Some teenagers claim that there is not a lot of to do except drinking.
For many unemployed people drinking is a form of escapism. One
must be aware of the fact that many problems are not caused by those who are dependent or addicted but by those who are occasional users. We have many
problems with legal drugs such as: tobacco and alcohol.
There are also young men who aren’t the real
drunkards but who drink excessively from time to time and it’s very dangerous.
Drinkers become depressed. After
drinking they suffer from sickness and headache. Heavy drinkers do damage to themselves and other people. Alcohol can make them aggressive. It can
upset their coordination and impair their judgement. Alcohol is very dangerous for drivers.
The big problems of each society are
drugs. It is dangerous for the young people even for children. The drugs can be:
- smoked -
injected
- sniffed - inhaled through the nose
The well-known drugs are:
- marijuana
- heroin
- cocaine
- LSD
- pervitín
Marijuana - is made from dried leaves and
flowering tops of marijuana plant. It is smoked in cigarettes form and in various pipes. The smokers have red eyes, they look like drunkards, they
laugh excessively or they are in a state of apathy.
Heroin - is the most dangerous and
addictive narcotic. It is made from opium poppies. It can be injected, inhaled through the nose or smoked. There are also heroin users who died after
the first dose of heroin (=overdosed). This drug can cause coma or death.
LSD - is a powerful hallucinogen.
A drop of LSD can be put on anything that can be swallowed.
Cocaine - comes from the leaves of the coca plant.
It is extremely addictive drug and addiction can begin after first dose. It produces a pleasant body sensation and this effect lasts about 30 minutes
that later changes into anxiety, headaches, and hallucinations. Continued using can lead to depressions, suicide and death. Cocaine can be sniffed or
injected into the bloodstream.
So why would anyone want to try such drugs? The answers are similar to reasons given for drug use in
the 1960s:
- because my friends use them
- because it’s just for fun when we go out dancing
- because other people can
become addicted, but not me
- because I’m young and I want to try everything once
Why should one not use drugs? It
is not worth our life! Even the first dose can kill us. The effects can sometimes lead to a state of relaxation or happiness that are not natural and
is life threatening.
My principal message to all people is:
Stay clean! Stay drugs-free!
