Describe the people´s clothes. What occasions do they put them on?

I can see people in different types of clothes in the pictures.

Picture 1 (bežec v športovom oblečení)

In the first Picture I can see a man jogging. He is wearing sporting suit – T-shirt, shorts, trainers,sun glasses. People always wear this type of clothes for doing sports. They are informal/casual clothes.

Picture 2 (žiaci v školskej uniforme)

In the second Picture I can see students in school uniforms. Wearing uniforms is typical for British and American schools. They usually consist of shirt, trousers and a tie for boys, and blouse, skirt and a tie for girls. Most of them have also a jacket with a school badge on it. It´s formal clothes.

Picture 3 (svadba)

In the last Picture I can see a bride and a groom. It´s a wedding. The bride is wearing long white dress and high-heel shoes. The groom is wearing tuxedo or suit and leather shoes and a tie or bowtie. It´s a formal clothes for special occasion.

2 Describe the factors which influence the way and style of dressing.

There are many factors that influence our style of dressing. First of all it´s weather and seasons of the year. In summer we usually wear light materials and colours. We wear T-shirts, tops, mini-skirts, shorts, dresses, flip-flops and accessories like hats, sunglasses. In winter we wear warm clothes: polonecks, coats, furcoats, trousers, boots, gloves, caps, scarf, anoraks.

To school we go dressed casually: jeans, trainers, shirts or T- shirts, hoodies. But for special occasions – like balls, theatre, party – we must be dressed up – it means fashionable blouses and skirts, high heel shoes and nice accessories (necklace, bracelet, rings, earrings – jewellery), bags, belts, hats for women. And suit or tuxedo, white shirt, tie or bowtie and leather shoes for men. It means we are dressed formally.

In some religions the way of dressing is very important. E.g. Islamic women must wear long dresses and veils to cover their face.

Talk about different attitudes of people to fashion.

People´s attitudes towards fashion are quite different. Some people care a lot about themselves. They spend a lot of money on clothes in brand name boutiques. On the other hand there are people who are not interested in fashion at all. They wear clothes according to their own taste, style and mood. People who want to be „in“ and don´t have enough money to buy expensive brand name clothes, go shopping to the second hand shops or Chinese shops.

What kind of materials and patterns can be used?

The materials are important and each fabric has its own special qualities. The most popular is cotton but wool, silk and synthetic materials are also fashionable.

As for patterns, the materials can be flowered, spotted, dotted, checked, stripped etc.

Say what colour clothes you usually wear and why. Talk about colours in general or if you know something about their special meaning.

Colours play an important role in fashion. White is a typical colour for babies to wear when they are christened, white is also the colour of wedding. In old films good guys always were white and bad guys always were black.

Some people choose colours according to their mood. When they are happy they wear light colours – yellow light blue, orange. When they are bad- tempered, the colours are dark – black, grey, brown, navy blue, red.

3 Simulation

You bought a T-shirt last month. It was very expensive but when you washed it, it shrank. Now you cannot wear it. Go to the shop and try to ask for a refund.
