Communication and its forms

Pictures

Look at the objects and describe them. What kind of communication do you use most? Explain why. What is the most/least effective and why?

In the pictures I can see different kinds of communication: a letter, a radio, a television, a telephone, a mobile, a notebook. Every day I use my mobile and notebook. I am in touch with my friends by calling, texting and chatting. I also watch TV every evening. I watch news, sitcoms, films and reality shows.

In my opinion the most effective means of communication are computer and mobile phone because we can talk and work in real time and find information very quickly.

The least effective is sending letters because it takes long time.

Describe how the communication started.

In the past people exchanged the information in the same way as animals do: using sounds, face, gestures and body posture. It was very primitive. Later they started to use pictures, signs and letters. The 20 th century was a century of new inventions: radio, television computers, telephone etc. Now the Internet is the most effective way of communication.

Compare the pros and cons of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Verbal communication is spoken and written. Speaking is usually face to face. The pros are that it´s in real time, we use facial expression, we can shout and whisper. The cons are – when you say something it can´t be taken back. The pros of written communication is that we can plan it and think about it. The cons- it is one way.

Non-verbal communication is sign language, eye contact, gestures, touches, movements of our hands, kissing and hugging.

Which parts of your body can you use to explain your thoughts and feelings?

We usually use our body for communication: gestures – so we use our hands, sign language(disabled people), face, eye contact. People can kiss hello or goodbye.

Name some symbols and explain their meaning.

Sometimes symbols and even colours can communicate without any words. E.g. Owls represent wisdom, dove – peace, eagle – freedom, dog – friendship, black cat – unhappiness, bee – diligence, stork – child, fox – fake etc.

We have signs for parking, restaurant, airport, not smoking, roud signs etc.

Black is a colour of death, white – wedding, blue colour is usually for baby-boy, pink for baby-girl.

Describe some gestures that have special meaning.

E.g. a thumb up means – OK, a thumb down means – not good, when a policeman shows his palm it means – stop, we shake our head to say yes or no, we show two fingers as victory etc.

Compare favourite ways of communicaton of different generations.

Older generation still prefers telephoning, sending letters and postcards, listening to radio or watching TV to get new information.

Young generation uses mobiles and modern IT (information technologies) like PC, i-Pod, i-Pad, the Internet, Skype. I use the Internet for information, to chat with friends on FB, to Skype with my family from abroad, to download film and music, to do my homework etc.

You are on your holiday in Scotland. Write a postcard to your friends stating weather, accommodation, your plans, etc.

Dear Martin,

my holiday in Scotland is fantastic. The weather is quite good, a bit rainy but sometimes sunny. I´m staying in a small hostel that is cheap. My room is small but clean. I´m sharing it with a girl from Russia. Tomorrow we are going to visit Loch Ness so I´m looking forward to Nessie – a monster. I´ll send you a photo.

I´ll be back next week so we can have a cup of coffee together.

See you soon

Helena
