The objects below were used in the past. What has replaced them today?

I can see different objects in the pictures.

The first one is a candle. Now it´s replaced by electricity.

The second one is a typewriter. Now we use computers to write letters, e- mails and messages.

The third one is a broom for sweeping the floor. Now we use a vacuum cleaner or a mop.

And the last one is an old-fashioned record player called gramophone. Now we use CD players, PC, tablets or cell-phones to listen to the music.

Identify the objects below and say how they relate to your life. (mikroskop, TV, rontgen)

Me, personally, I don´t use all of these objects.

In the first picture I can see a microscope. It´s used in laboratory to observe extra small things. We used it in our lessons of chemistry at primary school.

Next is TV. I watch TV every day. (rozprávať o obľúbených programoch)

The last picture is an X-ray picture. It´s taken by a doctor if something happens with our bones – e.g. broken leg or arm.

2 Compare the human´s life in the past and at present in terms of scientific progress.

In pre-historic times people´s life was very simple – they made tools from stones and simple clothes to protect them from the cold. They hunted for food.

Step by step people started to change the world. They invented the wheel, started to use water for energy. Important inventions and discoveries came in the 15th century –the discovery of America, the invention of printing press, the developments in astronomy, medicine and biology.

Industrial revolution in the 19th century changed the world completely: the steam engine, the electric light bulb, the electric motor and later inventions like airplane, car, radio, TV, computer and mobile phone.

Great progress has been made in the field of medicine. Nowadays doctors are able to cure and prevent many diseases, which help to prolong the life. Some of the most important discoveries are e.g. four blood groups, progress in cancer treatment or organs transplantations.

There are aslo many discoveries in the field of biology. E-g. in vitro fertilization and cloning are still the most debated issues.

Name some inventors and their inventions which have changed our lives.

Thomas Alva Edison – he invented the electric bulb

Graham Bell – telephone

Galileo Galilei – the sun is the centre of solar system

Luis Pasteur – vaccination and pasterisation

Which inventions couldn´t you do without (household work, school, free time)?

There are many inventions I cannot live without. E.g. vacuum cleaner, household appliances – microwave, cooker, coffee maker, mixer, dishwasher, fridge.

We need also bank services – credit cards and Internet banking.

Computers are very important for my life. Especially the Internet. I use it every day to chat with my friends on FB, to find materials and information for school, to download music, films, to skype with friends and family from abroad, to send e-mails.

I can´t imagine my life without a mobile phone, TV, CD player, cinema, car, shampoo, running water etc.

3 Simulation

Your birthday is coming. You would like to get a new mobile phone as a birthday present, because the one you have is out – of – date. Try to persuade your parent giving some sensible reasons why you should have a new one despite its high price.

Hi, mum. It´s my birhday very soon. I´d like to get a new mobile. The old one is out – of – date already. I need to be connected to the Internet and I´d like to have a smart phone. I know it´s very expensive but I have saved some money so I can participate.
