The Cultural Life in Bratislava

Bratislava as the capital is considered to be the cultural centre of Slovakia. I would like to present the galleries and museums first because even though they are usually the first things to come to mind when saying to word culture but only a handful of people usually go there when they have free time to spare.

There are quite a few options to choose from in this category in Bratislava. First is the Slovak National Gallery located near the banks of river Danube. It used to be a historical building but it is now known mainly because of the renovation done by the communist regime which changed the face of the building. It contains artwork from over 20 centuries and you can find the artifacts from almost every time period in here.

I would like to move on to the next institution which is only a few minutes away. It is the Slovak National Museum. It is divided into several sections among which are the collections of natural sciences exhibits and historical artifacts. One of the more eccentric is the newly opened Danubiana gallery located outside of the town in the direction of the Gabčíkovo dam which displays mainly new and abstract art.

After galleries and museums we move on to theaters. Bratislava can be proud of 3 known theaters which ring a bell in the other parts of the country as well. The first one would be the historical building of the Slovak National Theatre located in the historical centre of the town. It serves for many cultural events such as the Annual Ball of Bratislava. This building out of the three I would like to mention is the oldest one. The second is the ,,Union House´´ known in Slovak as Dom odborov. It also offers variety of shows throughout the shows. The last and the newest institution is the New National Theatre which premieres most of the plays. It is also positioned near the banks of Danube.

The most visited cultural institutions are the cinemas which have been associated with shopping malls during the last decade. The most notable are the ones in the Polus City Center, Aupark and Eurovea. Not surprisingly they are the most profitable places for culture seekers.

Bratislava has also been the location for many concerts. Out of the many just to name a few such as: Simply Red, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Shaggy and many others.

The town is also the place for annual Christmas Market and The Crowning of the King of Hungary.
