Scotland

The Northern part of the Island of Great Britain is occupied by the country of Scotland. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom with its own history, traditions and uniqueness which can’t be found anywhere else on the Islands. The country’s heart is nested in its capital city, Edinburgh, surprisingly; Edinburgh is the second largest city in Scotland. The capital city profits mainly because it is one of the most important and influential financial centers.

The first largest city is Glasgow which is well-known not only as a successful industrial area but also thanks to the two rival football teams which both represent the city of Glasgow. The reason why Glasgow is the number one when it comes to size is the Great Glasgow Conurbation which the city is part of.

The history of Scotland dates back many centuries ago. But what has always been typical for Scotland, not depending of the age, are bagpipes and kilts. Bagpipes are a typical musical instrument which was used for almost any occasion, such as weddings, war celebrations or even funerals. Thanks to the air supply that travels to the bag and then through the pipes the instrument makes a sound that cannot be made by any other musical instrument. Kilts on the other hand where used as a part of clothing of Scottish men. They used to help others to differ members of tribes. Some people regard kilts as skirts for men, but Scottish men are very proud of their traditions and so, it is no surprise that kilts are still worn.

Not only wearing kilts, but also other mysteries are connected with this land. The mystery of Loch Ness has made Scotland so popular, that thousands of tourists travel here, only to seek the mystical creature. Loch Ness monster is said to live in the Lake Loch Ness. More so, it is believed to be the last remaining dinosaur. There have been many photographs and depictions of the prehistoric monster but none of them were reliable. Thankfully, the unreliability of the mysterious being helped Scottish people in the process of making a huge attraction out of it.

As any other countries, even Scots have their worries and unsettled problems. One of these problems is their continuous fight for independence. In the beginning of my speech, I pointed out that Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. In previous months, Scotland has expressed a huge disagreement over this fact and since then, they have restarted the separation from England. Although the English government is trying to keep Scotland under control and within their ranks, the settlement of this problem is nowhere to be seen.

Speaking of Scottish Independence, what pops up in my mind when I think of Scotland is the famous movie, Braveheart. The movie’s director and also main actor is Mel Gibson. Gibson portrays the most famous warrior of Scotland, William Wallace. Wallace was the first one, to lead Scottish people into the war with England.

I have always been amazed by the determination and patriotism the Scots have fought with. Slovakia has too been extremely benevolent and that is why Russia or Germany occupied our territory. And when I look at Scotland, I see the things we lacked, when we fought for our freedom and right.

I have never been interested in Scotland, although I do admire their courage and character. Maybe, I will once set foot on their ground when I will have the opportunity to do so.
