Town and places (topic, essay, vocabulary)

Places have always been important in people’s lives. The place where we are born is called a place of birth. It is written on our birth certificate, our ID card and passport. Our character and behavior is strongly influenced by the place where we grow up.

The place where we study is usually not identical with our birthplace. Nowadays, many young people choose to study in a different town or country. In new study´s place can meet new people. Some students have financial problems therefore they prefer to stay and study in their hometown.

There are many places in the world where people would like to live or spend their holidays. Some of them prefer pure nature and peaceful countryside, others like hectic life in crowded towns and cities.

A town is larger than a village but smaller than a city. A city consists of residential, industrial and business areas. The majority of city area is taken up by housing. In all major cities skyscrapers, housing estate, business and shopping centers are built and roads and streets are usually well – developed. A global city is the main center of trade, banking, finance and markets. There are four traditional global cities - London, New York, Paris and Tokyo. A suburb is a place that is smaller than a town. It is situated on the outskirts of the city and consists of houses and other buildings such as church, school, pub and shops. A village is larger than hamlet, but smaller than a town. It is usually found in rural areas outside a town or a city where people live. Advantage town and cities are good infrastructure, better transport,

During their life people move from place to place from various reasons for example jobs, studies and marriage. Moving is connected with personal and social life and therefore adaptation to a new place may take some time. There are also people who spend all their life in one place because they do not have any social or financial needs to change their home.

We all leave our homes when we travel for holidays. There are many beautiful, surprising, exciting and inspiring places in the world that offer a lot of excitement, possibilities for sightseeing, shopping in luxurious shops, going to restaurants and clubs. The most beautiful cities are Prague, Barcelona, London, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco and others. Those people who look for the exotic and relaxation prefer the Hawaiian Islands. To the most beautiful wild places belong the Antarctica, Amazon, Grand Canyon, Canadian Rockies and Sahara.

Slovaks can spend their holidays either in Slovakia or abroad. When they choose to go abroad they often contact a travel agency. They choose a destination from a catalogue and the travel agent gives them all the necessary information and during the holidays they usually communicate with a travel guide.

Slovakia offers many attractive places for tourists. Beautiful sceneries, caves and roaring waterfalls attract many foreign visitors. The High Tatras and Low Tatras are great for spending active holidays during the whole year. Tatranská Lomnica offers many attractions for tourists for example horse – racing track, fitness centres, ski slopes and casinos.

Thousands of patients visit open air spas in the mountains of Štrbské Pleso and Nový Smokovec. The most famous spa is in Piešťany, with mud bath procedures.

Slovakia Also offers many interesting places for sightseeing. There are beautiful castles in Orava, Spiš, Zvolen and Bojnice. The town Levoča is famous for its wooden church; Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica are famous for their mining history. Slovakia also offers many cultural events to tourists such as folklore festivals in Východná, Detva and Myjava.

ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANATEGE

Living in the city has both advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side it is often easier to find work, and also there is better choice of public transport. There are also better services than in the village. There are many specialized shops, supermarkets, banks, post offices, schools, hospitals, sport facilities. All in all, life in the city is busy and you never feel bored.

However, for every plus there is a minus. Living in the city is very expensive. City is crowded and dirty and evenings in the city are very dangerous. One advantage of living in the country is beautiful nature. Village people don’t have problems with pollution. Fresh air is everywhere. Another point is that people usually have their own gardens, where they grow a lot of fruits and vegetables. Also they can breed cows, pigs, chickens and other animals for meat, eggs or milk.

It is good place for relaxation without stress. On the other hand living in the village has also disadvantages. In villages there aren’t many shops, there aren’t schools or hospitals so people have to commute to the cities. In conclusion, I think living in the village is good place for families with small children or old people. But it can be boring for youngsters.
