The USA

The United States is only a little smaller than Europe. It lies between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The USA is the fourth largest country in the World. It occupy a land area 9, 4 square km.

In the western United States you can see The Rocky Mountains with Mount Whitney rising to about 14, 000ft. For lack of rain this area is very dry. The rivers valley are deep and narrow, for example the Grand Canyon of the Colorado is 1, 800m deep and 350 km long.

 After 1848, when gold was found in California, great numbers of people crosses this mountains and deserts on their way west. The first farmers, who settled in the area around Great Salt Lake, had to fight against great difficulties.
 At hte foot of Rockies there is a world-famous holiday resort and sporting centre, Colorado Springs. Yellowstone National park, situated in these mountains, is the first natural reservation in the world, with hot springs, wild animals birds and plants.
