UFO - fiction or reality?
1. Flying saucer is the name for a type of unidentified flying object (UFO) with a disc- or saucer-shaped body, usually described as metallic, sometimes reported as surrounded with a glowing light.

2. Strange phenomena in the sky were noticed in all human history. UFO was interpreted as foreboding, angels, and other religious signs. Some of phenomena were interpreted as comets, meteors, others remained unexplained. Perhaps the oldest sighting of a saucer-shaped object is from 1290, when a silver disc was reported flying over a village in Yorkshire.
An interesting event is case from 2. June in the year 1947 from the town Roswell in New Mexico in the USA. A disc-shaped object was seen in the sky. A local farmer then supposedly found a wreck of flying saucer at his land. He announced his find to the police, then the police and the army surrounded place and wreck was taken away. Police tried to hide an incident before the public. Long years after the event newspapers still have brought the articles and statements of witnesses, who allegedly investigated the wreck and dead crew of flying saucer at the air-base Wright Field in Dayton. The event became a subject of several books and film templates. United States Army denies a whole matter up to the present day, declares it as a fiction of sensationalist journalists, but an official version of the event was several times changed. A famous sighting of UFO by American businessman Kenneth Arnold was on June 24, 1947. While he was flying his private aeroplane near Mount Rainier in state Washington, he saw nine brilliantly bright objects flying before him. Media were interested in Arnold's sighting. Arnold described objects as flat like big dinner plates, half-moon shaped, oval in front and convex in the rear. His descriptions gave rise to the terms flying saucer and flying disk. In Slovakia, mysterious objects in the sky appears particularly near by Jaslovské Bohunice.  

3. Studies show the majority of UFOs can be identified as ordinary objects or phenomena like for example: astronomical objects, aircraft, balloons (they can look disc-like in some lighting conditions), flock of the birds, unusual clouds (lenticular clouds) or light phenomena (mirage, Fata Morgana, searchlights). Some of UFO reports are hoaxes - they are man-made.

4. If it is impossible to explain phenomenon with an ordinary explanation, people sometimes think about a speculative explanation, for example: visits of strange cosmic civilizations΄ spaceships, visits of people from the future, who can travel in the time, visits of people from parallel spaces or paranormal phenomenon.

5. An extra-terrestrial civilization allegedly tries to communicate with us by corn circles. Opponents of this theory think that these regular geometric figures are creations of the human or of the natural. Agrosymbols are created by the agricultural crops, which are bent above the ground, but aren’t broken.

7. Corn circles appeared all over the world. In Slovakia, the first corn circle appeared in Fiľakovo in 1992. Another circle appeared in Pustá Ves in 1996. The majority of corn circles are noticed in the south and in the west of Slovakia, in the surrounding of Trnava, Bučany, Cífer and Petržalka. 

8. Ufology and palaeoastronautics  investigate UFO. Ufology is a neologism describing the collective efforts of those who study UFO reports and associated evidence. Some psychologists study persons, who met UFO or who were abducted by UFO. Psychologists are also interested in people, who allegedly have an implant from crew of UFO.  

9. UFOs have been subject to various investigations over the years. Governments or independent academics in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Sweden, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Spain, and Russia are known to have investigated UFO reports. Probably the biggest project was Project Blue Book, which investigated more than 10 000 UFO reports since 1952 to 1970 in the USA.

10. Some people believe that governments are covering  up information regarding UFOs or work with aliens. These ideas are an example of a conspiracy theory. A conspiracy theory is when people don’t believe the official story about a subject, they believe that something is being kept secret.   

11. UFO and aliens are popular themes of science fiction films. Famous films are for example: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers or Forbidden Planet.
