Health and diseases

Health is one of the most important things in man's life, but if you are healthy, you usually don't appreciate (ocenit) it. You often realize (uvědomit) it when your parents or one of your friends is seriously (skutečně) ill. At present we have more illnesses that we don’t known before, but they are very dangerous and can kill. Scientists (vědci) still (pořád) can't find medicines to all ill. I think that the prevention is very important and plays a big role too.

Everybody should (by měl) undergo (podstoupit) a regular check-up at least (nejméně) once a year. However we usually go to the doctor's when we don't feel well or have a temperature.

Medical (zdravotní) care (léčba) of any type in our country is almost free of charge (zdarma), although (nicméně) we have many private doctors here. We do not pay for prescription (předpis) or for some medicines (léky). Now we must pay for checking-up and other medicines.

Since our childhood (dětství) we have been protected from some diseases by vaccination.
Adults should be protected by vaccination too “for example: flu or tick’s encephalitis (zánět mozkových blan)”.People should go to doctors and dentists for a preventive check up. They prevent diseases and other problems.

We can suffer (trpět) from various illnesses beginning with common (běžných) children diseases such as: measles (spalničky), chicken-pox (plané neštovice), mumps (příušnice) or scarlet-fever (spála). We usually suffer from common infections such as cold, flu, tonsillitis (angína) and so on. When we are ill we usually lies in bed, drink hot herbal teas, take pills (prášky), drops (kapky) or vitamins and after a week or two we feel well again.

However, the situation sometimes may be more serious (vážný) and needs special treatment (léčba) in hospital, for example heart attack, appendicitis (slepák), breaking arm or leg,  animal or snake bite (kousnutí), big bleeding (krvácení), poisoning (otrava) or some really dangerous disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia (zápal plic), leukemia, diabetes (cukrovka) and other.

The Health insurance (pojištění) system is undergoing (podstupuje) some changes at present. Employers (zaměstnavatel) must pay health insurance for their employees (zaměstnanci) but everybody must pay extra money for their health insurance. I think our National Health Service is now in crisis (krize).

It's true that the prevention is better than a cure. The best way to cures yourself is not to catch it. We should try (zkusit) to live a healthy way of life, which means we should have a good proportion (propozice) of work and leisure (volný) time. We should practise sports, eat healthy food with lots of vitamins, we shouldn't smoke or drink too much alcohol.
