He wrote many books in this style - his works are for example The Time Machine, The First Man on the Moon, The Invisible Man and the most famous book is The War of the Worlds. With this book depend one story, when this book was reading in the broadcast, people meaned that it is really report and they went to the panic.

From the beginning of this century comes also James Joyce. He together with Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka mark the turning point in a modern novel. He was born in Dublin, wrote an experimental prose using the stream of consciousness. Dubliners is a collection of short stories. His masterpiece is Ulysses. Homer's Ulysses wandered for 20 years around the Mediterranean. Joyce's Ulysses wanders around Dublin in the course of one day and all characters in the book correspond to the characters of the legend.
In poetry the most outstanding author T. S. Eliot, a Nobel Prize winner in 1948. In his cynical and comic poetry he shows the chaos and sterility of modern world, he shows the emptiness of life where everything loses its meaning.

At the beginning of the fifties brought the social situation in England a group of young novelist who spoke up for the undervalued university graduates from lower class families. They were angry with society and their anger gave itself as a name to the whole group - "Angry Young Men". The most famous member of this group names Kingsley Amis. He is best known for his above novel, which was published in the first half of fifties. The name of this book is Lucky Jim.

William Golding is another Nobel Prize winner from the year 1983. He get it for his famous book Lord of Flies. This novel is exciting study of a party of English school boys who after an air-crash find themselves on a coral island surrounded by the sea. The boys form two groups, each representing a certain feature of the civilised man. One group is led by Ralph, who represents responsibility, honesty and mental party, the other by Jack, who embodies the desire for absolute power. The setting is a favourable environment in which the boys, left to themselves, are able to reveal their abilities and use the theories which have been given to them trough education. But the evil, having been awakened from its slumber by the presence of fear and anger, proves to be stronger than the good. Before being rescued, they fight and even kill, even in spite of their previous education in England. The author's pessimism is stressed by the symbolic title of the book, which is to remind one of the biblical personages, Beelzebub, Lord of Flies, one of the daemons representing negative powers in the development of the world.
