My favourite writer in English

Introduction

The most of people like or love reading. Some of them read books some read magazines, some just newspaper. I know people who don’t like reading, but the majority of them don‘t read because of lack of time. They have others hobbies not just reading. I thing reading is a good hobby. You sit in a comfortable chair and read an interesting book. You can relax, think about anything different not just about real life, you use your imagination, because you don‘t know how the characters look like. You can see yourself in one character if you like. It‘s your time and you can do what you want. Some people read because they are bored and I think this is the best activity for that time.

When I was smaller I was a big reader. I was in the library very often. But now I didn’t have enough time. I do a lot of sports or other activities like computer or sometimes TV. I like reading in generally but my biggest problem is time. I read every day before I go to sleep but I don‘t read much only a few pages so it lasts me very long to read a book. That’s why I hate fat books. I like short stories, tales, novelettes or I read poems. They are short, sometimes funny, sometimes I can recognise there what I feel too.

Kinds of books: adventure, sci-fi, horrors, detective stories, romantic fiction, about nature

My favourite writer

It is very hard for me to say who is my favourite writer. When I was smaller I had a period when I loved Eduard Štorch then I loved Karel May or Jaroslav Foglar. Now I don’t read much so I don’t know many writers. I read only recommended reading. I read a lot of poems because they are short. I couldn’t decided which writer I should choose. I like Edgar Alan Poe and his horrors, Robin Cook and his novels from medical background (prostředí) but I choose John Braine and his novel Room at the top.

John Braine

John Braine was a British novelist and journalist, he was from Bradford. He wrote some plays but they weren’t successful. The most successful novel was Room at the top and it’s continuation. Braine belonged to the movement called Angry Young men. This movement was against English society, their way of life, they hate old traditions, snobbery, moral, social inequality (socialni nerovnosti). The notion (pojem) Angry Young Men came from a book written by Leslie Paul with same name. Their main character is a young intellectual who is not content (spokojen) with his life and his position in society. He wants to change it. He usually came from a poor background, but he has high education. He wants to have better position but it’s not possible. He is usually very handsome so young rich ladies love him. And thanks to them he gets to better position.

The book

The book is about young man Joe Lampton. He has the qualities I have already talk about. He is from Dufton, a small poor town somewhere in the country. He comes to Warley, a bigger, for him better town, where he has a job as a bookkeeper. He makes career. He attends amateur theatricals and he meets Alice there – his lady-love and Susan, young rich girl which he wants to married with. When I read it I didn’t know which of them would be better for him. I think Joe didn‘t know it too. There are a lot of scenes where he professes (vyznávat) love to them. He is so persuasive (přesvědčivý) that I newer knew which he really loved. Alice is 10 years older than he, is married and has rich husband. Susan is younger, very pretty, rich and she seemed to me unspoiled. I liked her more. Joe loves more Alice than Susan. He plays on two sides. At the end he decides to married Susan. He victimizes (obětuje) real love and chooses money. Alice commutes a suicide and then Joe recognizes that he made a mistake. He is sorry but it’s too late.

The main motive is money. Everything is about money and you see them everywhere. I remember how Joe was happy when he could drive a car or be at the party with rich people. He takes notice about as small details as cigarette case are. One man has aluminum another has gold. I can’t forget the situation when Joe is in a pub with his chef and the chef wants to invite him for a drink. Joe can’t stand it. He thinks that the chef invites him because he thinks Joe doesn’t have money. Joe wants to show him that he has money so he invites the chef but the chef doesn’t want it too etc.

Another thing I can’t forget is his sexual catalogue. He categorizes women according to hers husband’s incomes. Woman from first category is very nice, pretty, slim, good in bed. Men’s from fourth category gets sweet awards when they were advanced (povýšit) etc. Joe and his friend belonged to sixth category.

The last thing I remember is the situation after Alice commuted a suicide. Joe gets drunk and he can’t find the way home. He fights with two men and then he gets in a tram. He hates everything, whole world. He feels sad, lonely because he lost the light of his life. And he is happy that an old woman despises (pohrdat) with him. He is happy that she notices him, that he is that he lives nevertheless he is drunk.

Alice – I didn’t like her. She seemed to me old, she was also married, I don’t know why but I didn’t like her, she didn’t loved Joe at first, she wants him just as a lover. But she falls in love with him.

Susan – I like her, young, sweet, she was like a child, she felt in love with Joe and it was real love

I think it can be applied to our lives. Today’s world is also about money. When someone wants to be good in anything, he has to have money. It’s in sport as well as in education as well as in work. When someone has money for adverts for example his product will be known and people will buy it.

I dislike that Joe played on two sides. He abuses Susan as well as Alice. I wanted him to married Susan but I didn’t want Alice to commit a suicide. In the book everybody abused everybody and everybody wanted to show that he is rich, can throw money through the window and it’s stupid I think.

I learnt that the life after the war must have been very hard. People lived modestly and the majority of them didn’t have much money, but there were people who had a lot of money but they lived only for themselves a little bit selfishly. The life seemed to be very unpersonal. People were very selfish, they lived just for money and they thought money were the reason of their lives. Some of them found that it isn’t true that they can be happy without money. They wanted to get into higher society but they found that that society is stupid, empty, about nothing.

I didn’t like the most thinks in the book but in generally the book was very nice and interesting. I newer know which girl Joe wanted and so it was thrilling. The background was gray and dirty and rainy but it didn’t matter. It made it more impressive. The book was really good.
