Weather, Seasons of the year

• our country is located (leží) in a mild climatic zone (mírný podnebný pás)
• winters are not too cold, summers not too hot
• there are four seasons of the year - spring, summer, autumn and winter
• each of the seasons lasts (trvá) about three mnths and brings us something nice as well as (stejně jako) something unpleasant

Spring

• the snow melts (taje)
• trees and grass (tráva) turn green (se zelenají)
• birds are heard singing
• you can see white snowdrops (sněženky), yellow primroses (petrklíč) and dandelions (pampelišky)
• field works (polní práce) start in this time

Summer

• sumeer begins on June 21
• the sun shines hot
• the highest day temperature are rising (stoupají)
• on hot summer days, there are often storms (bouřky)
• summer means two months of holiday both for children
• people can swim and enjoy hot weather by lake, swimming pool, they can go for trips

Autumn

• autumn begins on September 23
• autumn means start of school for pupils and students
• the sun rises (vychází) later and sets (zapadá) earlier
• during the day, the weather is normally nice, sunny and quite stable (poměrně stálé), this time is known as late or Indian summer (babí léto)
• autumn is very popular with many because of its nice colours
• leaves change colour
• birds leave for the south (odlétají na jih)

Winter

• winter begins on December 21
• it freezes (mrzne), the whole landscape (celá krajiná) is covered with snow
• there may even be snowdrifts (sněhové závěje)
• ice and slush (sněhová břečka) make transport difficult
• winter brings us the most beautiful festival (svátky) of the year - Christmas

The weather in Britain has very bad reputation (špatná pověst) because it is very changeable (proměnlivé). But in general the summers are not very hot and the winters not very severe (kruté).
