The London Underground

London Underground is a system of subway lines in London, UK. Combining surface and underground lines, London Underground is the oldest and one of the largest in the world. It dates from 1863 and is the first underground (subway) in the world.

One of its longest lines are Central line, Circle, Victoria and District line. The newest and fast line of London Underground is Jubilee line. Now it has 260 stations.

Londoners call it Underground or Tube, because of the shape of the most tunnels.

London's Underground short history

In the middle of the 19th century, London was the largest city in the world with over 2,5 million inhabitants and an area over 100 square km.

The streets were narrow and almost constantly clogged by horse-drawn vehicles - basic way of transport in those years. The rail network was perfectly developed in its suburbia, but trains were unable to get into London.
