Sports are one of the most popular leisure time activities. It is true that sports help us to be strong, healthy and keep our body in good physical and mental condition. Usually all sports and games are divided into two groups according to where they can be practised. We recognise:
1) OUTDOOR (outside) SPORTS – they are practised out. Among these sports are: skiing, sledging (tobogganing), hiking, horse riding, golf, marathon running, aquatic sports and many others.
2) INDOOR  (inside) SPORTS – are practised indoor and they can be practised all the year round. They include e.g. gymnastics, table tennis, boxing, chess, wrestling and so on.
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports and in Japan, sumo wrestlers are national heroes and huge crowds of people come to watch their matches.
Sports can be divided into 3 groups according to the season of the year:
Summer sports – they are practised in summer, often on water. Among these sports are:
* ATHLETICS – marathon race, high jump, long jump, triple jump...
*WATER (AQUATIC) SPORTS – swimming (breaststroke, crawl, butterfly, freestyle, backstroke), rafting, windsurfing, yachting...

Winter sports – they are practised on ice or snow. Here belong:
*SKIING  (downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, slalom, ski-jumps)
*SKATING (figure skating, ice-dancing, speed skating)

All seasons’ sports – especially games are all-seasons activities and they are practised both indoors and outdoors. The most numerous group of games are the ball games, e.g.:
*FOOTBALL is also called soccer. The top players earn large sums of money. The Soccer World Cup is held every 4 years.
They have become very popular in the last 10 years. People look for speed, excitement, danger and fun but on the other hand they risk their lives to do these sports.
*Bungee jumping, *Sky surfing, *Snow rafting, *Ice diving, *White water rafting...

- You jump off a bridge and you fall and fall and then just before you hit the ground or water, an elastic rope pulls you back. People say that it is like being a bird.

- This extreme sport is for people who are absolutely crazy. You put on diving equipment and dive under a frozen lake. And, if that’s not enough for you then try to walk upside down on the ice.

- Here you jump out of an aeroplane and use a board „to surf“ the air, doing gymnastics in mid-air. It is crazy but at the same time amazing. It is very expensive sport.

- You sit in a rubber boat and sail down a mountain at great speed and you can’t control the boat. It is only for snow fanatics because there have been many terrible accidents.

- You sit in a small inflatable raft and go down a river at great speed. Fast flowing mountain rivers are the best.

UNDERWATER HOCKEY – this sport is very similar to normal hockey, but you play underwater. You have to score goals and you can’t touch the puck with your hands. You need special equipment:
-  a mask, to cover your eyes and nose
-  a snorkel, to help you breathe when you are underwater
-  flippers, they help you to swim quickly
-  stick, this is only 30 cm long
-  gloves, they don’t have to be special gloves
-  swimming cap, you have to wear this because flippers often hit you
TABLE TENNIS (description)
-  it is a typical indoor sport
-  you have to use a bat
-  when you serve, the ball has to go over the net and it can’t touch the net
-  you have to score 21 points to win a set
-  usually you don’t have to wear special clothes but in tournaments, players have to wear shorts or short skirts and T-shirts

It is the greatest holiday for all sportsmen and sport fans. The first Games were held in Greece nearly 3000 years ago. In 1894 a Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin started the modern Olympic games. He believed that Games would help to increase international friendship and understanding. The main idea of the Olympics is: „ The better wins regardless of his colour, origin or religion.“
Since 1924 there are two parts of the Games – the Winter Olympic games and the Summer Olympics Games. They take place every 4 years and alternate once every 2 years.
Coubertin´s message is: „ It is not important to win but to take part.“
My attitude to sports
Sports and games have always played an important role in my life and they are one of my hobbies. When I was younger I learned to swim, ride the bike, play badminton and so on. Later I became more interested in various ball games such as volleyball and basketball. I also tried aerobics (body building) that has become fashionable in these days. As for watching sports, I love watching tennis tournaments, the matches of our ice-hockey team or world championships.  I prefer passive sport to active sport.
What does my PE lesson look like?
We have our physical training lessons only twice a week. Usually before the lesson starts we change into sports wear in a dressing room. We put on T-shirt, often in white colour, shorts and sneakers or trainers. If it is colder we wear tracksuit and sweatshirt. At the beginning of the lesson we must always do a little warm-up exercise. When the weather is good, we go out and run, jump into sand or simply play games. In winter or in the bad weather we go to the gym, there we do gymnastics, climb the rope or pole and play various games.
