Geography of UK

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of country occupies two large islands named British Isles. They lies in the the Atlantic Ocean near the west coast of Europe. From Europe they are divided by the English Channel. Great Britain consists of three parts : England, Wales and Scotland.

The majority of people speak English. There are minority languages, which are of Celtic origin – Welsh, Scottish and Irish Gaelic.

Relief of Great Britain have 2 main regions: Lowland Britain, Highland Britain. England and Northen Ireland are mostly rolling lands. Scotland and Wales are a hilly countries.

Great Britain is a country full of meadows, forests and fields. Hills can be found especially in Scotland and Wales. The main mountain regions here are the Cambrians in Wales, the Cambrian Mountains, the Pennines. The Cheviot Hills are on the border between England and Scotland. The Highlands of Scotland are the highest mountains in Britain with the highest mountain in country Ben Nevis.

Northern England is the country with beautiful nature, and cultural traditions. The Lake District National Park is popular with tourists and painters.

The climate in Britain is moderate but changes a lot. The western part of country is wetter, and eastern part is drier. It rains a lot in Great Britain so the vegetation is always rich and green - that is what makes the English countryside so beautiful.

The rivers are very important sources of energy. The most important river is the Thames, which flows into the North Sea. The longest river is the Severn. Other important rivers are the Trent, the Avon and Clyde. They are linked by a complex system of canals used for shipping, water supplies or hydroelectric power.

The greatest number of lakes can be found in Northern Scotland. From the Scottish lakes are the most famous Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. These lakes are not important for transport, but they are a big tourist attraction.

The sea surrounding the land brings a lot of advantages to the country. One of them is fishing and transportation. Important Ports are: Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol.

London, situated on the river Thames, is not only the capital of Great Britain, but the largest and most important port.

It si the home of about 56 milions people. Now about ninety percent inhabitans live in towns and about five percent work in agliculture. Great Britain is the oldest industrial country in the world. The most important industries are aircraft and car industry, iron and steel industry, engineering, chemical and textil industry and ship building.
