Humans

• From the beginning people were not able to live on their own and started to form a bigger group
• These groups created their system of laws and accepted behaviour which make it possible for people to live together

Society and laws

• society has a right to expect people to obey the law
• those who do not obey and they are danger to society, can be locked up 

Ethics

• called morality, moral law
• a study of morals which deals with moral rules or principles of behaviour (right and wrong)
• people can see difference between good and evil
• rules what humans should do

Ethical standards

• virtues – honesty, compassion, loyalty
• includes standards relating to rights – the right to life, to freedom, to privacy

Some vices

• Alcohol, drug abuse, smoking, greediness
• Rape, robbery, burglary, stealing, shoplifting, pickpocket, assault, hijack, mugging, slander, fraud, kidnapping, bribery, suicide, revenge, treason, murder
• Other words – kill in self-defence, hooligan, gangster, killer, criminal

Etiquette

• the formal rules of correct or polite behaviour in society
• some rules – to greet each other (young older, man woman), to help people in poverty or necessity, to offer seat on bus or train, men behave like gentlemen, how to use dinner-service, how to serve food, how to dress on special occasions ...

Punishments

When people do not obey a law or break some law they are punished

• pass a sentence on somebody
• pay a fine
• go to prison
• hang
• execution
• capital punishment – death penalty
