Compare the two pictures – the atmosphere, audience, kind of art you can expect while being here.

In the pictures I can see two different events.

In the first picture there is a theatre. We go to the theatre because of dramatic art. We can see different performances there: comedies, tragedies, opera, ballet , musical etc. Visiting the theatre we must be dressed up (women – dress and high heel shoes, men – shirt, suit and tie or bowtie), we must be calm and not to speak during the performance.

In the second picture  there is a concert of Pavol Habera. He is a Slovak music star. The audience in such a concert is very loud, people sing and shout. They are dressed casually – T-shirts, jeans, trainers.

For both events we must buy the tickets in advance – either personally or via the Internet.

2. How important is culture and art in life of people and what it means to them?

I think that culture and art are very important for our life. They give us pleasure and education. We know different kinds of arts: music, dance, dramatic art, cinema, fine art (painting, sculpturing) and architecture.

Speaking about music – we know classical and modern music. As for dramatic arts- there is: comedy, tragedy, opera, ballet, musical etc. We know also different music styles – pop, rock, jazz, blues or country. Slovakia is famous for its folklore music. We have many folklore groups dressed in typical traditional costumes. Many young people prefer modern dance – hip-hop, disco, etc.

I´m a cinema goer. I like comedies and thrillers. I prefer film in original version with subtitles, not dubbed. Especially American and British films because I can improve my English. Going to the cinema is a rather expensive hobby. Mainly so called 3D movies are not cheap. In summer people like going to the open-air cinemas.

If we want to see fine art we should go to the gallery or museum.

What cultural facilities are there in your town?

In TN there are lots of cultural facilities. You can go to the cinema to MAX – shopping centre or to the Metro-cinema. In a „performing house“ called ODA you can see concerts, films, theatre and dance performances. Typical „concert house“ is Piano Club – where you can see the concerts of different music styles. There is also Gallery of Milos Alexander Bazovsky and Trenčianske Museum here. We have also a big exhibition area in TN where you can visit different exhibitions and fairs.

Compare cultural life in town and village.

In a small town or village there probably aren´t many opportunities to have a rich cultural life. The only possibility is very often just the local „house of culture“ where discos or balls are held. But there are also several pubs with a possibility of playing bowling or darts. Nowadays many people use the Internet for downloading films, series, music etc. It´s much cheaper than going to the cinema or theatre or live concerts.

Speak about well known international and Slovak theatre and film festivals.

The Academy Award (Oscar) is the main national film award in the USA. Every year actors, directors and screenplay writers are awarded a prize called Oscar. Other international festivals are in Berlin, Cannes, Karlovy Vary and Prague. In Trenčianske Teplice and TN there is an international Art Film festival every year in summer.

Say what sort of dance you prefer: disco, folk, hip-hop, modern or ballroom. Compare these dance styles and explain your choice.

I´m not a dancer but I like going to the discos where different types of dances can be seen. I don´t like folklore music but my sister danced in a local folk group as a child so I have seen some performances. Folk dancers wear traditional costumes. The ballroom dance I can watch on TV – there is a programme called Star Dance. I like it but I can´t dance like that. Some of my friends dance hip-hop so I usually support them during the competitions and performances. I like also films where hip-hop is danced.

3. Simulation

You have won 2 tickets to the cinema. Your friend does not like going there. He/she prefers watching a DVD. You have to persuade him/her to go there giving at least 3 pros in favour of cinema and 3 cons against watching DVD.

I would say: Let´s go to the cinema! It´s an American comedy with subtitles, not dubbed so we can improve our English, I´ll buy you popcorn and Cola and we can also go shopping because it´s in MAX.

Don´t stay at home watching DVD. You have seen the movie for several times, you will eat mountains of ice-cream and you will cry that you are fat! And it´s dubbed not with subtitles. It´s not good for you.
