Characterise and compare the families in the pictures. Speak about advantages and disadvantages of being the only child in the family.

Picture 1: (rodičia s jedným dieťaťom)

I can see a family with 1 child. They look very happy. To be an only child has some advantages, e.g. she can eat all sweets, parents love only her, she has got everything she wants. Disadvantages: she must do everything alone at home (dish washing, hoovering, dusting, going with trash, walk a dog....) she is bored without siblings.

Picture 2: (veľká rodina na dovolenke)

It is a big family. They are on holiday on the beach. They have 2 children – sons. They are teens. They look very happy because it´s summer and nice weather.

Talk about relationships within your family (siblings, parents and children, grandparents)

We have got very good relationships in our family. I get on well with my brother. My parents are democratic but sometimes they are strict. But I love them. I have grandma, she lives in Soblahov. I go to see her every weekend.

Describe an activity or event in your family which you really enjoy.

I like our family meetings. We are together during birthdays, weddings, feasts, holiday, sometimes funerals. I like also our family trips. We usually go hiking and cycling to the mountains. Sometimes we watch TV together or we go to the cinema.

I don´t like Saturdays, because I have to do housework, e.g. hoovering, dishwashing, dusting, cleaning floors, windows etc. I don´t like gardening and DIY activities. (Do It Yourself – repairing things, redecorating house or flat etc.)

Work out a list of reasons why people get married and get divorced.

People get married because they fall in love, are in love, they want to have children, they want to live together in a house or flat, they share everything (feelings, money etc)

People get divorced because of: drugs, alcohol, money, gambling, unemployment, cheating etc.

3.Roleplay/Simulation

You would like to have a party celebrating your birthday. Explain who you would like to invite and why. Your parents do not like some of your friends who are extravagant and want you to have a family party. You prefer your friends so give as many arguments in favour of them as possible.

A: Mum, I´d like to have my birthday party at home and I want to invite my friends.

B: And how many?

A: About 10

B: Oh, It´s too many and your friends are extravagant. We don´t like them!

A: But I will manage everything. We´ll be calm and polite, no alcohol, no drugs. Just fun. Please!!!

B: Ok, so. But me and dad will stay at home and you will clean the house next day.

A: Ok, thanks. I love you mum!
