Hobbies and Free Time

Compare the people´s hobbies. Which of them do you belong to? Why?

Picture 1 – dvaja mladí muži sledujú v telke športový zápas

In the first picture I can see two men watching TV in the living room. Many people like watching TV, films, quizes, reality - shows, sitcoms, soap operas and so on. It´s also my style of spending free time.

Picture 2 – otec a dcéra hrajú tenis

In the second picture I can see people playing tennis. It´s a trainer and a small girl. Many people like doing sports in their free time. Me, personally, I like sports. I go skiing and skating in winter, I go to the gym twice a week, I like hiking and walking my dog.

Picture 3 – dievča fotografuje

In the third picture I can see a girl taking a photo. Her hobby is photography. Maybe she is taking a photo of a street performance.

2. Compare the ways how young and old people spend their free time. What hobbies do they have?

At present more and more young people like doing sports. The favourite sports of young people are: cycling, roller skating, body building, floorball, martial arts, gym activities such as jumping, yoga, pilates and so on.

Many young people like dancing so they go to the clubs. Also concerts and music festivals are very popular. Many teens have a pet such as: cat, dog, fish, guinea pig, parrot, hamster, snake and so on.

Teens spend a lot of time on the Internet. They chat on FB, download films and music, look for information.

On the other hand adults spend free time gardening or doing DIY (Do It Yourself) activities like repairing cars, redecorating the house, design the furniture, paint the flat and so on. Many adults like learning foreign languages so they go to language schools.

What are pros and cons of being a member of a sports or other clubs?

Many people like being a member of sports or cultural clubs. People who have creative hobby, such as singing, dancing, acting, painting, folk dancing or playing the musical instrument like going to the clubs to develop their talent.

The pros is: you meet new people and get a lot of experiences.

More and more people like doing sports. They join a sports club which is very good. If you are a member of a club you are forced to do sports regularly, you pay less for entrance because you have got a permanent pass, you meet new people and you keep yourself fit.

Compare your lifestyle with your parents and speak about sharing household duties in your family.

My lifestyle is very different from the lifestyle of my parents. I have got a lot of free time, I don´t have to get a job for living, just to have pocket money for myself. I spend much time with friends – partying, doing sports, going to the cinema. My parents take care of me and my siblings. They have responsibility for many things. They must pay all our family costs. They spend their free time gardening, reading books or magazines, watching TV.

We share all duties in our family. My mum cooks for us and does shopping, my dad does DIY activities and he repairs everything what is needed. Me and my siblings – we share other duties: hoovering, dusting, dishwashing, going with trash bin, etc.

What do you usually spend your pocket money on and where you get it from?

I get my pocket money from my parents monthly. But I have also some extra money because I have a part time job in a bar/shop/pub...

I usually spend my money on Fridays when I´m with my friends, or I buy some clothes, cosmetics, parfumes, make-up, sometimes food etc.
