Jobs

Pictures

Look at the pictures and say what kinds of jobs are presented. What responsibilities do they have? Which position would you choose and why?

I can see in the pictures different jobs and professions.

A carptenter – he makes things from wood, e.g. furniture. It´s a manual job.

A cook – he cooks in a restaurant. He prepares different meals for guests.

A dentist – he reapairs our teeth. If we have a cavity it hurts. So we must see a dentist.

A postman – he delivers letters, parcels, postcards. He must be in a good condition because he walks a lot.

A baker – he makes bread and rolls. He must work also at nights.

A soldier – he fights in a war. It´s very dangerous

A police officer – he catches criminals, gives penalty to drivers, cares about our safety

A judge – he is in the court and he is responsible that criminals go to the prison

My dream job is ............................... because.................................

Compare a manual and a intellectual job giving at least 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of each.

Manual job needs a physical power. Some of them are very dangerous, e.g. truck driver, miner, pilot because there is a high risk of injury and accident. In many manual professions you must work at nights.

On the other hand manual job is better paid, you have muscles, you don´t need to study a lot.

There are many different types of intellectual work. For some professions you must have a lot of knowledge (scientists, doctors, lawyers...), for others skills and talent (artists, painters, singers....). If you are good you can earn a lot of money, travel all over the world for business trips. But you must study hard at university for many years and you have got responsibility for many things.

What information would you give in your CV?

The candidates send the job application and their CV together with a letter of motivation. Their CV should include personal data and details about education, skills and work experience, interests. The one who is chosen is invited to an oral interview.

Talk about your preparation for your future job (school, practical training, skills, qualifications)

Každý podľa seba

How and where can people look for a job to find help?

In Slovakia it´s more and more difficult to find a job. There is unemployment everywhere. There are several ways to find a job. You can read job advertisements in newspapers or on-line on the Internet, you can ask your friends and family or you can go to the job centre and ask for help.

Simulation

What information would you give in your cover/motivational letter? How would you prepare for a job interview (clothes, reasons why you have chosen the job, questions you would like to ask about the job).

In a motivational letter I have to write about my education, skills and knowledge and why I´m the best person for the job.

For my job interview I must prepare. I have to find the information about the company, I must dress up – it means suit, tie and shirt for men and costume, blouse and high heel shoes form women. Nice hair style. I should prepare some questions for my future employer. E.g. what time the work starts, working time, working at weekends, what is my salary, what benefits do they offer, if I have flexible working time etc.
