Man and Society

Pictures

Look at the pictures, describe the situation and say why behaviour of the people is unsuitable. What punishment do they deserve?

In the first picture I can see pickpockets. It´s an everyday situation on the streets and in the supermarkets. Pickpockets steal money from bags and pockets of people. Once also my wallet was stolen in Tesco. It was a very bad situation for me because I had there money and documents. I think that punishment for the pickpockets should be: work in parks and tidying up streets for free.

In the second picture I can see a burglar. Burglars steal things from houses and flats mostly at night when people sleep or if people are on holiday. I think that burglars should be arrested and go to the prison. And they should pay the money back.

In the third picture I can see a man who is a kidnapper. He is blackmailing the family. He kidnapped a child. I think that murder and kidnapping are the worst crimes. The criminals should be in prison a get the life sentence or capital punishment.

The role of family in the education of young people.

Our family is here to teach us what is good and bad, how to behave in different situation. E.g. how to eat at the table, how to use the cutlery, how to dress for different occasions – formally or casually , how to behave in the theatre or concert. Teens have often bad idols and examples so family helps them to build the hierarchy of values.

If parents speak rudely, children will imitate their models. If parents only have TV dinners, children will not know how to behave at the table.

Our friends and their influence on our behaviour.

Friends we meet everyday can influence us a lot. If teens are in a gang they have problems with police, drugs and alcohol. They don´t go to school, don´t help at home, they are not polite.

On the other hand good friends can help us. I spend a lot of time with my best friend. We have the same hobbies – going to the gym. We do jumping and yoga together. We go to the cinema and theatre and we have the same part time job in a bar.

Talk about Slovak manners when inviting/visiting.

I think Slovaks are known by their hospitality. We like having guests. We usually invite guests to our flat or house – not to the restaurant. We prepare food and drinks by ourselves. Very typical is to offer some refreshment like: fruit or vegetable salad, Apple strudle, waffles, cake, sandwiches. We serve soft and alcoholic drinks, especially homemade spirits: wine, beer, plum brandy etc.

We celebrate also family events at our homes. We prepare lunch or dinner or, if possible, we arrange garden party or barbecue.

When coming to visit we usually bring a bottle of wine or some sweets for children in the family.

What is typical for us – we take off our shoes after coming in and we put on slippers! I think that in Britain and the USA it´s even impolite. But it´s our habbit.

Say different occasions when people send wishes and congratulations.

We send wishes and congratulations for: Christmas, Easter, wedding anniversaries, birthdays, graduation ceremony, baptism/christening.

We send condolence in a case of funeral.

Dangerous people to society – how the society reacts to this group of people.

People who are dangerous to society are criminals. They cause different crimes:

Theft, kidnapping, pickpocketting, rape, hijacking, robbery, vandalism, blackmailing, murder, shoplifting, etc.

People are afraid of criminals and I think they must be punished. There are different types of punishment: fine, prison, capital punishment – hanging, injection, life sentence, deportation.

Describe your green ribbon party.

Our green ribbon party was a great social event. It took place in....................(date and place). We were all dressed up – boys in suits and girls in long dresses and high-heel shoes, with nice make-up and hair style. Our parents were really proud. We invited also our teachers. We got green ribbons as a symbol of graduation. We had brilliant food – starter....., main course and .................at midnight. The party was till 4 o´clock in the morning.

Suggest which school rules you would like to change and why.

As a student I´d like to change many things. I hate getting up in the morning so I suggest to start school at 10 a.m. every day but finish at 1 p.m.

I think we should be allowed to smoke outside. There is no problem to put some big ashtrays to the back yard. We should be allowed to leave school during the breaks if necessary. I don´t agree with wearing our name-cards with photos.

I would delete changing shoes into slippers. I think that we are grown up and it´s a private thing if I want to spend my school time in slippers or in shoes. Neither students at universities nor people visiting cinemas, theatres, banks and other institutions take off their shoes.
