Shopping

Pictures

In the Picture you can see different types of shops and service facilities. Identify them and say when and how often you and other members of your family use them.

In the Picture I can see a restaurant. People go to the restaurant for lunch or dinner or celebrate some family events.

Then there is a library. We can borrow books here if we like reading and don´t want to spend money for books. But if we want to buy books we can go to the bookshop.

Then I can see the Post Office. We go to the post to send letters, parcels, money, to pay our bills, buy Lotto etc.

There is also a bank. We can have an account and credit card in the bank and we can also borrow money to buy a house or a flat.

Hairdresser´s – we go there if we want a new hairstyle or to cut our hair.

Cinema – we go to the cinema to watch films. Nowadays it´s quite expensive so it´s cheaper to download the films from the Internet and watch them at home.

There is also a Travel agency – we go there when we want to go on holiday.

2. Do you enjoy shopping? What do you/don´t you like shopping for?

Shopping is an activity people love or hate. I like shopping in the shopping centres because there is everything under one roof. I usually go shopping with my friends and we shop for jeans, T-shirts, shoes, rings, earrings etc.

What shopping facilities are there in your town/village?

I live in a village and we don´t have many shopping facilities. There is just one grocery store where you can buy bread, rolls, dairy products (milk, butter, cheese, youghurt), meat and meat products (salami, ham, sausages,) and also newspapers and magazines.

So we go shopping to TN bacause there are supermarkets (Tesco, Kaufland) and shopping centres (Laugaricio, Max). We can buy everything there: fresh vegetables and fruits, meat – fresh or frozen, dairy products, baker products etc.

There is also a market where we can buy potatoes cabbage, beans, apples, tomatoes, etc.

What are some of the famous brands and products that you can buy in many countries in the world?

I´m a sport person so I prefer brands like Adidas, Nike, Puma.

But my sister likes shopping at NewYorker´s...............................

My friends wear brands like ....................................

Give some pros and cons of supermarkets/hypermarkets comparing them with small corner shops.

A shopping centre is a large indoor centre with different types of shops, cinemas, wellness centres. There are also cafés, bars, restaurants, fast food where people can relax after doing shopping and there is everything under one roof. They are open late in the evening or non-stop, at weekends and on public holidays. But we sometimes buy also goods we don´t need and it´s bad.

On the other hand small corner shops have shop assistants and you have a personal contact. But there is not so wide choice. We know: baker´s (bread, rolls, cakes), butcher´s (meat and meat products), greengrocer´s (fruits and vegetables), chemist´s (medicines, make-up, creams, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes), shoe shop, stationer´s (pens, notebooks, rulers).

What marketing strategies do shops and other services use to attract customers?

Shopping is a big business nowadays. Managers spend lots of money on advertising. They tell us every day that their product is the best. Commercials are everywhere – in newspapers, magazines, on TV, on buses, trams and trains.

Shopping centres use special strategies like: double packaging, special offers and bargains to catch customers and have a profit.

Simulation

Imagine you are in a clothes shop buying a T-shirt/jeans. What questions would you ask in the shop and what requirements for the T-shirt/jeans you would have?

I would ask these questions:

I would like to buy a T-shirt. Can you show me the blue one? Can I try it on? Where are fitting rooms please?

It is too big for me. Do you have a smaller size? What material is it made of? Can I wash it in the washing machine?
