Towns and Places

1 pictures

Identify the places in the pictures. Speak about what kind of visitors they are suitable for and give reasons why.

I can see different places in Slovakia in the pictures.

Picture 1: (Piešťany)

In the first picture I can see Piestany – the famous spa. The symbol of the town is a healed man breaking his crutch. The spa treats mainly illnesses of the locomotory system and rheumatism. This place is for visitors who have health problems or just want to relax.

Picture 2: (zámok Bojnice)

In the next Picture I can see the castle Bojnice in the town of Bojnice. There is also a nice ZOO nearby. The castle is famous by interesting performances and so called

„Festival of Ghosts“. This place is for visitors who are interested in history and like sightseeing.

Picture 3: (Čachtická pani a Čachntický hrad)

In the last picture I can see the castle of Cachtice and the Lady of the castle - Alžbeta Báthory. She is known as „The Bloody Elisabeth“. She was very cruel. She killed young girls – virgins – and took bath in their blood to be young and beautiful forever.

Describe your birthplace and places which have played an important role in your life. Include: location, history, sights, cultural and sports facilities.

(každý sám)

Pre TN – historia – dole

In TN there are lots of cultural facilities. You can go to the cinema to MAX – shopping centre or to the Metro-cinema. In a „performing house“ called ODA you can see concerts, films, theatre and dance performances. Typical „concert house“ is Piano Club – where you can see the concerts of different music styles. There is also a Gallery of Milos Alexander Bazovsky and Trenčianske Museum here. We have also a big exhibition area in TN where you can visit different exhibitions and fairs.

In TN there are many possibilities to do sports. There is a big football stadium, hockey stadium – even two because hockey has a long tradition here – indoor swimming pool, many fitcentres and sporting halls. You can do almost all kinds of indoor and outdoor sports in TN and also summer and winter sports. There are good conditions for winter sports like skiing, skating, snow-boarding and tobogganing nearby. In summer you can go cycling, rollerskating, jogging etc.

Prepare a programme for your foreign friend´s stay in TN and its neighbourhood. It should include visiting sights, catering, entertainment and buying souvenirs.

Tn is a town with long and rich history. This place was called by the Romans Laugaricio. There is also the inscriptionon the castle rock commemorating the victory of the Romans.

I would start my guide tour by sightseeing. The first stop is the Trencin Castle. It´s built on the rock right in the centre of the town. Many tourists want to visit the Well of Love. There is a story about a true love of Fatima and Omar. Fatima was a Turkish slave of Štefan Zápoľský, the Lord of the Castle. Omar was a rich Turk who loved Fatima and wanted to save her. He offered gold for Fatima to Zápoľský but he refused. What he wanted was the well, because the castle didn´t have water. So Omar and his friends started to dig the well for many years and the water appeared finally. Fatima and Omar were free.

The historical centre lies under the castle so we can pass the Square of Peace where is the Town Hall and the Piarist Church, and also Town Museum and the Plague Column.

We can buy some souvenirs in Info Agency and then we can have some food and drinks in one of many restaurants in the centre. My favourite one is ..............

In the evening we can go to the Piano Club. There are good concerts there. Or we can go to the CineMax or to ODA where are theatre and dance performances.

We can visit also Piešťany, Bojnice (porozprávať z obrázkov) and Trenčianske Teplice – spa, and castles in Beckov and Čachtice (povedať o Čachtickej pani).

What are some advantages and disadvantages of living in a town?

There are many reasons why people prefer to live in a town. The truth is that it is easier to find a job in a big town than in the village. In big towns there are also universities. This is why many young people move to the cities. They want both. They want to study and find a good job. For children there are many possibilities how to spend their free time. They can go to playgrounds or parks. They can play sports and games and can go to language classes, dance or other lessons. Parents can spend their free time in pubs or gyms. They can have quick lunch at many places and they can go shopping.

On the other hand there are people who live in villages. There are some differences between people living in a town and in village. People in a village are more polite, they help each other and they have time for neighbourhood visits. They spend more time in the countryside, they play with animals and they cultivate crops and flowers. They do not need many shops and department stores because there are usually one or two small shops where you can buy everything you need. Transport is one of the biggest disadvantages of living in villages. If you don´t own a car you depend on public transport which can be uncomfortable and time wasting. As for services – in villages people have basic medical care but if they need to see a specialist they have to travel to bigger towns. And it´s just the same with banks, offices and big shops.

Towns are very polluted and dirty. In villages there is clean fresh air and water.

Where would you like to live in the future?

Každý podľa seba. V krajnom prípade využijem témy USA, GB.

Which is the most beautiful holiday destination you have ever been to?

Každý podľa seba.

Simulation

You are standing in front of ther railway station in TN. A foreigner asks you how to get to the city centre. Describe both ways – on foot and by bus. Tell him where and how he can buy a ticket for the bus.

You should take the bus No. 2. Buy a ticket at the bus driver. It´s sixty pence, I think. Then get off at the following bus stop. Then you must use the subway and pass the passage/arcade and you get to the Square of Peace where are shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, banks etc. You can turn right and pass the square and you get to the place Štúrovo námestie or you can turn left and walk down the square and you get to the hotel Elisabeth.

But you can go on foot. Just pass the park, use the subway to the hotel Elisabeth and you get to the Square of Peace.
