THEATRES

In London –

The National Theatre,

Old Vic – very popular, small theatre

Barbican Theatre – is famous for Shakesperian plays

In Bratislava – The National Theatre, Theatre of P.O. Hviezdoslav

Types of plays:

a)tragi-comedy...is combination of comedy and tragedy

b)comedy...people laugh, funny situation

c)tragedy...sad, personages die, about serious matters (Romeo and Julia)

d)historical play...people and ivents from the past

e)musical...there actors speak, sing, dance

Opera and ballet are perfomed in an opera house. Some people usually don´t understand of opera.

LITERATURE-is about books and read

Types of books:

Novel – phychological (our feelings, inner word, thoughts)

• historical
• adventure (is full of actions, shouting, ride of hourse, bad poeple)
• detective, thriller (some crime, investigate)
• science fiction (sci-fi)

Story (short story)

Fairy tales – Sleeping beauty, Cinderella, Snow white, Little red riding hood

Travel book + newspapers, magazines

Literature can be divided into 2 categories:

1.)non-fiction books – are usually for information. There are textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, biographies, autobiographies and memories, self-help books, travel/history/art books and cookery books.

2.)fiction books – are about imaginery people or events. There are two types of fiction books:poetry and prose.

People who are keen on poetry cen read poems by famous poets in books of poetry. Those who prefer prose can choose to read tales, short stories, novellas, romances, crime/spy novels, mysteries, science fiction, westerns, thrillers or historical novels.

MUSEUM-contains objects illustrating history, science, culture . . .

There you can see pottery, weapons, furniture, costumes, documents, ornaments (jewels).

Open-air museums – are not buildings, but exhibits (usually architectural exhibits) are arranged autside. You can see wooden houses, churches, wells . . .

ART GALLERY-is a building where pictures or sculptures are exhibited . . .

The National Gallery (picture of famous painters from Br. history, by painter William Turner)

The Tate Gallery (Henry Tate was a rich merchant, who collected works of arts and he gave them to the nation)

The National Portrait Gallery (you can see portraits of celebrities from Br. history)

2.)Popular music – it´s jazz, folk music, techno, hip-hop, pop, rock . . .

CINEMA – is a building for showing films or it´s films as a form of art

Types of films – historical film, thriller, comedy, tragedy, sci-fi, horror, documentaries, cartoons ...

If you feel like going to the cinema, you can buy tickets at the cinema about half an hour before the film starts.

Going to the cinema is an important part of youth culture in today´s society. Young people like the cinema and see it as an excellent place to meet friends. After the film, they enjoy chatting about the plot, cast and scenes they liked most.
