Many people like travelling because it is a good way to learn about life. A lot of people prefer staying at the seaside and other are interested in local traditions, history and culture. Many tourists travelling to abroad because they have learnt the local language. You can travel for pleasure on business, either for short or long distances (vzdialenosti).

If you have a lot of money you can afford (dovoliť) an expensive holiday using all services provided by a travel agency. Many people cannot afford such luxury so they prefer travelling on their own, staying at a campground, bungalow and spending their days on the beach. People feel free because they can eat when they want and enjoy their holiday.

A new type of holiday is “home-swapping”-it is exchange your home with a family in another country. Tourists usually travel with their families or friends but explorers (výskumník) usually travel on their own because they want to be independent which can sometimes be quite dangerous.

You may travel by land (zem,súš), by air or by sea.

If you travel by land, you can travel: walking (pešo), riding a bike or a motorcycle, going by bus or by car, travelling by coach (diaľkový autobus). They all have advantages and disadvantages.

Walking is healthiest but it is good only if you travel short distances. If you travel far away you choose a bus, train or a car.

BUSES are quite fast, comfortable and travel agencies use to transport holidaymakers (dovolenkári) to the seaside or to the mountains. You can usually get a drink and there is a TV where we watching for example films.

TRAIN travelling by train was common (bežný) in the past. Today is popular because is combination of speed, comfort and pleasure. They have air-conditioning (klimatizácia). For children is travelling by train very interesting and special experience. Train tickets are not very expensive and if you travel at night you can even sleep in sleeper. If you are hungry, you may have a meal in a dining-car. Sitting at the window and watching the beautiful countryside. Railway (žel.stanica) are usually big, noisy and there are a waiting room (čakáreň)- for mothers with small children, and non-smokers, ticket offices, telephone boxes, luggage office or lockers (skrinky), restaurant, toilets of course.

PLANE travelling by plane is very fast, safe but it is very expensive. It is comfortable, especially for long distances. Airports are large, busy (rušný). On they of you departure (odchod) you have to check-in (kontrola), go through (cez) passport and security checks (prejsť pasovou a bezpečnostnou kontrolou) and customs (colnica). You are sometimes offered (ponúkať) some refreshment (občerstvenie) when you travel by plane. If is bad weather and turbulence you have to have oxygen mask.

CAR is most common (najbežnejší) way of travelling today. If you have a car you are independent , you may travel at any time of the day at any speed. Everywhere you will find motorways (diaľnica) with car park, modern petrol stations and restaurants with toiletes and showers where you can have rest. If you feel tired, you can sleep in a motel and continue you journey.

BOAT (loď) is popular. It is quite cheap, but can become uncomfortable when the weather gets bad. If you travel for short distances, you may take a ferry (trajekt), for long distance ocean liners. Travelling by sea takes a lot of time, but it may be a unique experience.

Lots of people have to travel short distance every day, they commute (prichádzať) to work or school. If you live in a big city which has goat an underground (podzemný)-subway (metro), you don´t have to spend a lot of time commuting to work. The underground trains usually go to every five minutes, the speed are quite low and you can get to work or school quickly.
