Family

A nuclear family consist of a mother, father and children who share one home. Family is important social unit. It provides protection, education and care. It gives us basic physical, economic and emotional security and also love, responsibility and support.

Everybody becomes member of family immediately after born. But there are also some exceptions like orphans and abandoned children, who grow up in foster homes, where they get love from non-biological parents and siblings. People can adopt these children, but it is very long process.

The main role of parents is to raise their children. Parents should teach us how to differentiate between right and wrong, how to solve problems and become an independent person. We can see several types of parents. Firstly, there are democratic parents, who respect opinions and lead a dialogue with children. I think this is the best type. Then there is authoritative parent, who doesn’t want to allow anything. There can be generation gaps because of that. Liberal parent gives too much freedom, what is not so good and over caring parent is the worst parent, because children are spoilt and dependent on parents. They are usually unable to set up their own families.

All family members have some duties and responsibilities. Domestic chores, like cooking, shopping or cleaning are not only for women. In Slovakia boys are expected to help already from childhood. Modern women are ambitious, they require more than just some help with little chores. Nowadays we can see men pushing prams on maternity leave.

There are lot of single people in the World. Now it is important to be at good university and for more and more people it is more important career than family. So young people want to get married at least after university, what is about 25 years. When is single couple living together and they are not married, it is called cohabitation. It is unacceptable among Catholics and old people. There is no prejudice against women and men who don’t get married. They are called spinsters and bachelors.

Family starts, when the engaged decide to get married. Fiancé proposes to his fiancée. Then fiancé gives a bouquet to his potential mother in law and asks the fiancée’s father for permission to marry his daughter. Then wedding is usually in town hall or church. The couple exchange wedding rings and promise each other to live together in good and bad.

There are lot of divorces in the World. Main reasons are gambling, unemployment, lack of trust, financial problems, generation gaps, addiction to something …A woman who losses her husband is widow and man is widower.
