More and more people today realize that good health means good, longer and a happier life. Therefore, they take better care of their health than before. They eat healthier food, they try to practice different kinds of sports and avoid stressful situations as much as possible. We need to be in a good shape, because it is important for working and when we want fully enjoy our lives. Doctors often say that mental health influences our physical condition. Problems like ulcers, migraines or problems with digestion are the results of mental problems like depression, fear or anger.

Everyone wants to have beautiful and strong body. Not only young people. It is not so difficult when we live in developed country, it’s just about good eating habits, doing sports and trying to live healthy. But, what about Third World countries? There are too many starving and there are epidemics like cholera, typhus or malaria. It’s part of everyday life.

Every year many people worldwide become victims of various accidents. Most accidents happen on the road and at work and many children are injured when they are playing outside or at home handling dangerous objects.

When we are ill, we usually see a doctor, called a GP what means general practitioner. At first we have to wait in the waiting room. When the nurse calls for us, we see a doctor. The doctor examines our body, asks about symptoms and in the end prescribes some medication, antibiotics, painkillers or vitamins, which we can get in a pharmacy. It’s available only on prescription. When the illness is too serious to be treated at home, the patient is taken to hospital. Employed people pay their health insurance monthly. They have own insurance card. We are free to choose our doctor in Slovakia.

Everybody has to go through various diseases during their lives. There are lots of diseases, which are not so serious and don’t take a long time to cure. It’s diseases like flu, tonsillitis, chicken pox etc. But there are also serious diseases we have failed to find a cure for. It’s for example cancer and AIDS.

AIDS is one of the most serious diseases that threaten people nowadays. It’s a disease that impairs the immune system of human body. Then it is open to any infection. Infections that are not dangerous for normal people can be mortally dangerous for AIDS patients. No cure or vaccine for AIDS has yet been discovered.

In the last decade there were several epidemics like SARS or bird flu. Bird flu is very contagious among birds and can also kill some domesticated birds like chickens or ducks. The virus doesn’t usually infect humans. In 2009 there was a new flu virus H1N1 , so called swine flu, which killed many people in Mexico, USA and many other countries.
