HEALTH CARE IN SLOVAKIA

Medical care in our country is basically free of charge, the government encourages all citizens to be responsible for their health and has introduced a system in which the patient partly shares the cost of some treatment and medicine.

According to the law all citizens are covered by health insurance. There are two types of insurance state and private, but most of our citizens are insured by the General Health Insurance Company.

Health Insurance System is undergoing some changes like the employers pay health insurance for their employees, but private persons must pay for their insurance themselves while the state pay the insurance for children and retired people.

Our GP just operates in their offices, they do not make house calls. This is a great disadvantage since sitting in the waiting room can quite easily make you vulnerable to picking up other disease when your resistance is low anyway.

HEALTH CARE IN BRITAIN

National Health System provides free health care to all people. Everybody is free to choose a general practitioner (GP) in his own home area and be registered on his list. GPs join in partnership and thus share the cost of expensive madical technology, so they work in cooperation with districtnurses and other caregivers.The average NHS doctor will have about 2,000 patients registered with him. They are paid a flat rate irrespective of the number of visits a patient makes or the kind of illness he has. If you are handicapped or too ill to get to the surgeryon your own, the doctor will come and visit you at home-irrespective of the time of day or night.

If you need special treatment, will send you to see a specialist at the local hospital. In an emergency call emergency by dailing 999. Most front lina ambulances are crewed by paramedics.They stabilise the patientwhere thex are rather than rush them straight to hospital.

You can self-certify that you are unfit for work for up to four days and you just call your employer saying you are ill and you won´t lose money from your paycheck.

There are two different types of insurance, most people have private health insurance. It is possible to choose your doctor and have treatment. You pay the doctor and then send the bill for the treatmen tto your insurance company. They will then send you the money.

On the other hand, there are several problems with private health insurance. First of all, it is too expensive, especially when the treatment needs specialists. If one is poor, the government will pay the doctor for treatment. If you are not poor, but unable to pay insurance, then if you fall ill, you must pay for it yourself.

When we see or take part in an accident or see someone injured we should first of all call the ambulance. Until the doctor gets to the scene of the accident there are several methods how to keep the injured person safe.

ASPHYXIATION- start mouth-to mouth resuscitation immediately after getting the patient to fresh air.

BLEEDING- Elevate the wound above the heart as possible. Press hard on the wound with a sterile compress until the bleeding stops.

CUTS-apply a mild antiseptic and sterile compress after washing with soap under warm running water.

ELECTRIC SHOCK- if possible, turn off the power. Don´t touch the victim until contact is broken. Pull him from contact with a rope, wooden pole or loop of dry cloth. Start artificial respiration if the breathing has stopped.

FAINTING- Seat the patient and fan his face if he feels faint. Lower his head to his knees. Lay him down with his head turned to one side if he becomes unconscious. Loosen his clothing and open the windows. Keep the patient lying quietly for at least 15 minutes after he regains consciousness.

BURNS-if mild, with the skin unbroken and no blisters, plunge into ice water until the pain subsides. Apply a mild burn oitment. Do not try to clean the burn. Apply sterile compress and keep the patient quiet and comfortably warm.

ANIMAL BITES- wounds should be washed with soap under running water and the animal should be caught alive for a rabies test.
