Hobbies and Leisure

Leisure time = Free time

LEISURE TIME

Definition

  • can be defined as a period of time spent out of work and essential domestic activity.
  • a period of time before and after compulsory activities (e.g. eating, sleeping, and day-to-day stressful operations)
  • it is the time of entertainment and fun, time for their hobbies.

The importance of leisure time

  • everyone needs to relax.
  • We switch to a new activity which is beneficial for us, because we regain new energy and are more effecient if we start working again.

There are people who cannot draw a line between their job and free time. For them their profession is their hobby and they are ready to spend nearly all their free time at work, which might not be good if you don´t get enough relaxation.

TYPES OF LEISURE ACTIVITIES

There is a wide range of leisure activities you may choose from. We can devide them into different categories.

  1. ACTIVE X PASSIVE ACTIVITIES

Active (physical)

- if you are one of those who work indoor and spend most of their time sitting and doing paper work (if you have a sedentary job) active leisure activities might be your cup of tea.

- for those who need physical activity.

- they strengthen our health and lengthen our lives.

  • There are three types of active leisure activities :
  1. activities which expend little energy such as walking, yoga, dancing, jogging, fishing, hiking or going camping and sightseeing.
  2. high-impact activities such as kick-boxing, ice hockey, soccer and other ball games or any kinds of sport that consume much more energy and are competitive.
  3. extreme even dangerous sports belong here too like skydiving, going on safari, driving racing cars, scuba diving, diving with sharks, climbing, whale-watching,etc.
  • These activities can be done in a team but also

In a team

-we can join a team- if you are a sports fan, joining a sports league is a great way to have fun, meet new people and still get the physical benefits of working out.

-e.g. soccer, baseball, softball and rowing teams.

Individual activities

- such as fishing, cycling, picking/gathering mushrooms, gardening, hunting, but all these activities can be also done in a team and those in a team individually, so it depends on us if we want to do it alone or with our friends to combine it with socializing, too.

  • Physical activities can be also devided according to the seasons during which we do them:

Summer activities

-People take advantage of the warmer temperatures by spending more time outdoors during the summer.

Activities such as travelling to the beach and picnics occur during summer months.

-cycling and water sports like sailing, canoeing, boating, waterskiing, swimming, parasailing, paragliding, diving are characteristic for summer. Also going on festivals, going summer camping, playing sport games, golf, hiking, horse-riding are very common.

Winter activities

  • Many winter activities involve the use of snow in some form- these are snow activities:

Skiing, snow castle building, snowball fights, snowboarding, snowman building, snowmobiling, winter camping,

  • Many other winter activities and sports focus on ice and these are curling, ice biking, ice diving, ice fishing, ice hockey, ice sculpture, ice skating.

Passive (mental)

  • involve no physical work
  • they might require a substantial mental effort. E.g. playing board games like chess or scrabble and cards. Puzzles, sudoku, crosswords, electronic games (this could help with hand /eye coordination, memory or sequencing tasks)
  • if your job involves a lot of physical activity, you may prefer to spend you free time indoors doing these passive activities like reading books and magazines, cooking, watching TV, collecting, browsing on the Internet, chatting on social networks, listening to music, etc.
  • They are a good way of relaxation for many people as long as they do not become an obesession.

There are several groups of passive activities one may prefer doing during their free time:

At home

  1. educational

- they develop our practical skills and might serve as exercise or have an educational, stimulating and psychological role.

-E.g.language or computer courses, but also playing computer games (if they are played for an uncontrolled period of time they might become counterproductive)

  1. creating

-they result in some end product.

-e.g. Woodworking, software and artistic projects, creating models,restoring/tuning cars, building computers from scratch or creating card or paper models of planes or ships

-a lot of people enjoy arts: they go in for amateur painting, drawing, singing and dramatics.the most popular art form is music: listen to music, take lessons to learn to play a musical instrument (play the guitar or drums), decide to found a band (they practise to be able to give concerts to large audiences)

  1. collecting

-it has been popular and there are lot of collectors who attend special shows and take a chance to swap and exchange their treasures.

-is becoming less popular at present with young generation who is taking up computer games instead.

-objects of interests might be: stamps, postcards, badges, model cars and ships, coins, beatles, bottles, antiques, napkins, vintage cars,

They just go window shopping, playing darts, eat out, go bowling, have a drink, take fitness classes, clubbing to the disco, gambling on slot machines or just meet their friends and idle their time away in the anonymous crowds of people.

  1. Many people love taking care of pets and also older people like spending their free time at their weekend cottages sitting on the porch and observing the countryside.

In another country

Apart from home-oriented leisure activities people might spend their free time also at the seaside on a holiday just relaxing and sunbathing to escape from their hectic lives.. They usually stay at the hotel.

TEENAGERS

Younger teenagers have more free time so they have a chance to have more hobbies which they can devote more time to. They can enjoy the benefits of not being a children anymore, but not even adults. They have less duties, they are treated as vulnerable creatures who canot handle such pressure, so they are not given too much homeworks and are allowed to do whatever they want. Unfortunatelly, if they are not under controll they might start spending their freetime in a counterproductive way like sitting at the computer and doing nothing but playing games. They are more likely to become lazy.

Older teenagers like joining different sport teams or they go to fitness centres. They attend different interest societies and language coureses, maybe music lectures since young generation is interested in music and in its creating.

Also they spend most of their time socializing with their friends, going to the cinema, go clubbing and shopping, spending the night out and having fun.

Since they are more serious, many of them are members of different organizations like charities, environmental organizations or they might do some voluntary jobs, too.

If they already have children, they spend their free time going with them on picnics, visiting their gandparents, taking them to the playground, etc.

OLD PEOPLE

-since old people are retired and don´t work anymore, they have more free time and opportunity to do what they want.

-in the past they usually did some useful but passive activities like working in their garden, cooking or baking, embroidering, knitting, sewing and other hand works and collecting, which was very popular.

-on the other hand, at present a lot of older people try to keep fit by doing different kinds of sport and exercises, especially jogging, doing yoga, but also they don´t want to lock themselves away from the outside world so they enjoy travelling, sightseeing or they go to spa towns or recreational places.

They keep pets to feel less lonely and they like looking after their grandchildren who lit up their mood . They just try to do anything that makes them feel they are still usefull.

Spending weekends in shopping malls has currently become a very common pastime

Collecting can be a social hobby too, because collectors attend special shows and take a chance to swap and exchange their treasures with others.

IN THE PAST X AT PRESENT

- Due to modern technologies our lives have become more easier and more comfortable, which means that we don´t have to work hard and we have more free time.

- Our homes are equipped with modern devices that make our lives easier like vacuum cleaner, washing machine, dishwasher and labour-saving devices. You can buy pre-cooked meals, put them into a microwave and it takes only 10 minutes to be ready.

-So thanks to these equipments we have more free time, what is more, all the services provided make it even more comfortable like online shopping and the possibility of contacting people through the Internet.

On the other hand, life is more hectic and faster.so we have less free time. We spend more time at work (a lot of people return back home at 7.pm), more people need more than one job to earn enough money for living,to survive, because life is becoming more expensive.

Even though we have more possibilities how to spend free time and they are quite cheap, but people don´t do them simply, because they don´t have enough time.

In the past

-People in the past were longer outside because they wanted to see and talk to their friends,

-They socialized more-they met and visited each other more, they went together hiking, they did sports, had barbeques, which become less common at present

-sewing, knitting, crocheting and other hand works were more popular.

-one of the most common passive leisure activities was collecting stamps, coins, etc.

-boys liked to build paper models of airplanes and ships, while girls liked cooking and helping their moms.

- sport clubs were more common

At present

-Nowadays we hardly ever go to the cinema, beacause we are used to downloading the new films we want to see from the Internet.

-today we spend more time inside our houses , because due to new technologies we can communicate with our friends on the Internet.

-today hand work is not common anymore, only amongst older people just like collecting.

-today we have a wide range of leisure activities we can choose from yet often we found ourselves being bored. People enjoy social activities from chatting on the net to clubbing, they prefer fitness centres than joinig a sport team.

-nowadays young people are more likable to switch to comfortable ways of spending their free time.
