Jobs and Employment

  1. The importance of having a job

Everybody needs a job, and everybody has some physical and mental potential that can be used meaningfully. No matter what we do or where we work, the most important thing is to be satisfied and feel that our lives are meaningful.

  1. Reasons why people have jobs
  • First of all people have jobs to earn money for living, since the world of work is run, determined and influenced by the power of money.
  • Another advantage is that it improves our social life.Dealing with both pleasant and unpleasant people makes us more civilised, informed and sophisticated.
  • It exercises our brain. Keeping up with new technologies, problem solving and continual studying make our brain more alert.
  • Thanks to job our days have a purpose.
  • Work provides us with a certain degree of discipline. A period of organized time prevents us from getting idle, ignorant and apathetic
  • Finally we cannot omit the results of work. From a psychological point of view, it is highly satisfying to look back and see the benefits of our work. It makes us feel useful and needed. Without that, working would be pointless.

  1. CHOOSING ONE´S CAREER IS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN EVERYBODY´S LIFE.

Most children have only vague ideas of what they want to be. At first they admire so called ´hero´ professions such as pilots, astronauts, firemen and policemen. Girls on the other hand dream of becoming actresses, models, singers or ballet dancers. But as they get older and mature their criteria for choosing their profession become more and more realistic, because they have to coordinate their own interests, hopes, desires so that they meet the demand for particular jobs in a free market economy. The influence of their parents, teachers, relatives and friends can´t be disregarded.

  1. What and who influence us while choosing a job
  • First of all it´s our family, mostly parents, but also our teachers and idols, who we admire and want to be just like them.
  • Furthermore masmedia, advertisements and classifields influence us too, but also the economical situation.
  • Money is very important for us too and sometimes it leads to the dilemma of whether to choose an interesting jobwhich is slightly underpaid or whether to take up a well-paid job but boring career.
  1. ASPECTS WE TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN THINKING ABOUT OUR FUTURE JOB
  1. SOCIAL ASPECT includes:
  • if we like meating people/ to have contact with other people like customers and clients or meeting the public
  • whether we prefer working in a team (to be part of a team) to working individually on our own.
  • if there is an agreeable working atmosphere
  • if it is a work involving a good social status
  • if this work is respected in the society
  • if there are any chances of promotion
  • does it include any fringe benefits?
  • if there is any possibility to enrol courses or training
  1. MATERIAL ASPECT
  • if it is a well-paid job
  • what things are to our disposal
  • whether it is an adequate salary reflecting time, effort and energy invested in the task to be fulfilled.
  • If the salary enables a good quality of life or decent living, starting a family, payment of all bills, but also travelling and taking holiday.
  • Whether we mind if the work place is well-equipped with all apparatuses,
  • if there is a company car available
  • if it is a nice office
  • whether we are willing to commute to work every day or rather we want the work place to be located within a walking or driving distance in my area.
  1. WORK ITSELF
  • whether we prefer doing physical work to sedentary job
  • what type of job we find more ineresting and are capable of doing it:

whether we are searching for a skilled, white-collar job or work in a public sector

  • whether we want an odd job or a permanent occupation (if it is full-time or part-time)
  • if you mind having a flexible working time or rather prefer shiftwork, a regular day work
  • Do you mind working at night.
  • do you want to be your own boss, to be self-employed/freelance
  • whether you prefer creative and flexible type of work to monotonous and routine.
  • Does this job require a lot of responsibility?
  • What would I be in charge of?
  • If it is a high-powered job or low-powered
  • does it offer a possibility for further personal and professional development
  1. DISADVANTAGES
  • do you mind getting overloaded/overworked or burned out?
  • Would it matter for you if you had a tiring, monotonous and boring work?
  • Is this job underestimated by the society?
  • Isn´t is underpaid?
  • What if it does not enable you to utilize fully your knowledge skills and experience?
  • What if you had limited chances of promotion if you had this job?
  1. JOBS CHOSEN BY DIFFERENT AGE CATEGORIES

CHILDREN

Some children look up to their parents and want to follow in their footsteps, therefore many families have ganerations of doctors, lawyers or carpenters.

However, those whose parents have devoted their whole lives to their own career may have a rather negative influence on their off-spring.

TEENAGERS

Teenagers between the age of sixteen and eighteen are usually expected to make their choice whether to continue their education or enter the world of work. They take seminaries from subjects they want to do their school leaving exams from. The eager ones who want to earn some money as soon as possible might face a lot of problems finding a suitable job because of lack of qualifications and experience. The job market has only odd jobs or seasonal jobs to offer them.

Sooner or later most of them reassess their hasty decision and enrol in courses or trainings to get better qualification.

Statistics show that those young people with higher or university education have a better chance of finding a job to their satisfaction. A lot of companies and firms these days are aware of the fact that progressing computer technology puts their employees under pressure of competition so they offer a wide range of on-the-job-training.

  1. LOOKING FOR A JOB

It is a quite demanding occupation in itself, but there are many resources to help those who want to find a job which we will be satisfied with:

  • Advertisements in national and local newspapers are one of them.
  • The most common way of looking for a job is browsing on the Internet on special websites where companies upload their job offers.
  • There are quite a lot of local and regional institutions such as job centres or employment offices which can be helpful mostly in organizing re-qualification trainings for those who have been made redundant.
  • Using former colleagues´help or other work contacts is also highly recommanded.
  1. PROCEDURE OF APPLYING FOR A JOB
  • After collecting and evaluating information about a would-be job one has to write a letter of application.
  • An inevitable part of the application form is a curriculum vitae (CV) which should contain personal details, work experience, educational background and further training or other skills or abilities which are relevant.
  • The aim of the application is to get an interview. The interview is very, if not the most, important stage in the procedure of getting the job. An applicant can either gain or lose a lot.

If the applicant is really serious in their effort to get a job they must be very careful not only about what they wear and what first impression they make but also what and how they communicate to the interviewer. There are a lot of guide books where applicants can find some useful information on how to ´survive´ an interview.

  • Those applicants who are lucky, or rather good enough and get the job become employees of a company, firm or institution. The employee and employer sign a work contract which clearly states the job description, duties and responsibilities, working time, salary and conditions of promotions. The job may include several fringe benefits,i.e. extra advantages such as a company car, luncheon vouchers, etc. These are also called perks (perquisites).
  1. WHAT TO DO IN CASE WE LOSE A JOB

Although the right to work is one of the basic rights of human beings, everybody must be prepared for the possibility of losing their job.Perhaps one is either sacked or just laid off because there is not enough work temporarily or is being made redundant because a company downsizes and reduces staff.

Whatever the reason, everybody has to cope, don´t give up and grisp with it to find another one. We try to look for in the same field both in our country or somewhere in a foreign country, but also we can re-qualify, take trainings or start our own business. The most important is to stay flexible.

In spite of the fact that there is a pert of the population which considers being unemployed more beneficial to going to work, the majority regard work as crucial to their existence.

On the other hand, the government in countries with high unemployment rates should propose measures which would improve employment policies and if people become unemployed or redundant , unemployment benefits should motivate them to work and not stay out of work.
