I think reading books is very interesting –that is for me, but it is also too important for those who want to improve their grammar in that language in which they want to improve. I like reading books, but I do not have a lot of time to read what I really want. I like romantic, adventure or thriller books. The book must interest me immediately from the beginning. But reading would not exist without literature. I like more English literature than American, but also some American` s writings are quite good.
Literature is set of texts, which have some social account. Today literary work is made by printers, but in times, when book-print didn’t exist, the literary work was shed (šírený) as a rumour (reči) and today is known only how someone wrote it down. And so, these legends and historical facts became to section of literature.
Literature has of course many functions: at first it is mainly social function, as education, enjoyment, secondly economical function - when publisher distributes a good book it can bring money, because when the book became to be a bestseller, a film companies want to make a film, based on the book.
For me is literature mainly knowledge source, because I haven’t so much free time to read, so when I read some book, it is only in the tram or in the bus. I think that for our generation is many times more exciting to see some film based on book, but we don’t read the book, because you must spent much more time by reading than see a film. But I must admit, that it is sometimes my case too, but from time to time some film inspires me to read the book, and than I’m very surprised that the book was better than film and the film was only an outline of the book. And after I appreciate that I should read more.
Literature can be divided according to action and style of writing on some kinds:
A FICTION (about imaginary people or events, 2 types – poetry and prose: poems, read tales, short stories, novellas, romances, crime/spy novels, mysteries, science fiction, westerns, thrillers, historical novels… Literature is made-up story, it can be for example:
SCIENCE FICTION book, story is often about new technical invention, future, travelling in time, AI, about visitors from space. Story is based on actuality scientific knowledge. Famous author of this kind of literature was Verne or Ray Bradbury.
In ADVENTURE BOOK is story usually about travelling and discovering new places, or about interesting places in our planet, there can be one or more heroes.
In the beginning of the DETECTIVE STORY reader is a witness of commission the crime, and reader know or don’t know, who the murder is. And than the whole story is about people, who saw the crime, or someone who commission the murder, or about the detective, who investigate the crime.
Very similar kind of book is THRILLER, the story can be about the crime to, but it need be a murder but I think in thriller we can see better the character of the heroes.
POETRY is written normal speech, or PROSE it is short story written in rhymes, where can we see mainly author’s view on the story he wrote and sometimes we must think about the story and try to understand the author and what he want to say.
FAIRY-TALE is made-up stories for children and already from the beginning is clear, who is bad and who is good. Hero can be queen, king magician, dragon or some supernatural feature. In the end of course the good defeats the evil.
At first sight is FABLE (bájka) very similar with fairy-tale, but there is one big contrast, heroes of the story are animals and they acts as people. Each animal representative some character of people, bad or good. For example a fox representative smart people. It is usually short story and in the end is a point, it is some instruction for each of us and our life.
Non-fiction (for information - textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, self-help books, travel/history/art books, cookery books…)
BIOGRAPHY is exact description of the live of some, usually famous person, for example actor, sportsman, politician, governor and when author write about himself, it called AUTHOBIOGRAPHY.
The last part of non-fiction literature are books for education, and at first it is ENCYCLOPEDIA, there can we find some special knowledge. Compared with the other book, encyclopaedia ha got special form, there is many small texts with explanations, drawings, photographs and pictures. Secondly it is TEXT BOOK-it is used mainly for study, it can be for study languages, maths, geography and so on.
