Law and Order

Wherever people lived together and formed societies, they always felt the need for developing rules of conduct to keep the peace and order within the society. The people needed rules for the settlement of disputes and for the organization of their governments. Simply put, the law is a set of rules that are enforced through government’s policy, its court and other agencies.

Law and order have always played a very important role in the evolution of mankind. From the very first primitive settlements, through majestic cities of Roman Empire ending up with the cosmopolitan metropolis which can be seen nowadays.

Every single civilization, had its own system of rules according which people behaved and knew what was acceptable and what on the other side, was not. Without the influence of law, every man could do just as he pleased. With law and order people new that criminal behavior, would be fined financially, in most serious cases with even physical punishment. Executions where nothing new to the past world, taking steps against the state, or even being not suitable person for some politicians, could cost you your life.

As the time passed by, the law and order changed according to the country, people, and nature of society. The process of changing resulted in the division of the crime into two main basic groups; these are either less serious cases, such as bullying, theft or cases of higher seriousness like murder or rape. An important fact is that no one commits a crime without a proper reason. Several factors may be related to the cause of criminal behavior.

Neglected children or abused children during their childhood are often so influenced by their previous negative experience that it can result into committing a crime. This can lead to different smaller crimes which could be followed by the children joining groups of people with similar destiny. Researchers believe that these youth join criminal gangs because such a membership can earn respect and social status for them.

The rate of unemployment which is notable since the economical crisis which started few years ago, forces people do things, that they wouldn’t normally do under no circumstances. People with poor background and employment histories consisting of mostly low wage jobs are left to make a choice between long term low income and a profitable crime.

On the other hand, people surrounded by wealth and luxury are highly expected to step on the criminal alley. Tax avoidance, rape, drug addiction or polygamy, these are only few of the reasons, which can lead people, who are missing absolutely nothing in their life, right into the prison. Eventually destroying their business, family life, and in some cases, their life as a whole.

At the end of the day, people with good financial background spend their prison time in good equipped cells, which may seem easy but even though; this will force them to think about their crimes. What is more, capital punishment even dramatizes the atmosphere surrounding both law and order. Personally, I think that it should be prohibited, because damaged psyche is very often worse than physical pain.
