Northern Ireland
The Island of Ireland is politically separated into two parts. One part is a completely standalone country while the other part belongs to the ranks of the United Kingdom. The Northern part, which I am going to speak about, is occupied by the country of Northern Ireland. The two of the countries, haven’t always been separated. It was not so long ago, when Ireland was partitioned into Northern and Southern Ireland by an act of the British Parliament in the early 20th century.
The reason, why unlike the Southern Ireland the Northern Ireland hasn’t become a Free Independent State, is that the citizens of Northern Ireland chose to remain within the United Kingdom. Even though Northerners consider themselves purely Irish, the number of English people is very high and they might influenced their decision. More so, the Northern part of Island of Ireland has been colonized for centuries by the British which theoretically makes them a British colony, but of course, not on paper.
Another influential marker was the Plantation of Ulster which was a region of the Northern Part of the Island in the 17th century. The Plantation of Ulster was simply put, an organized transport of thousands of English and Scottish wealthy men. This event was mainly arranged to raise the number of English speaking people in Ulster. And to settle down the rioting Catholics with moving as many Protestants to this region as it was possible. As you could probably say, this transport wasn’t welcomed at all. But the mixture of characters and the nationalities ended up well. And as a result the Northern Ireland still sticks closely to the United Kingdom.
From my short review on Northern Ireland’s history, you can imagine how hard the country’s life was, and is. Still, they managed to be unique, rare and also respected in many aspects. A great example of the uniqueness is the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. This is the one and only national celebration that is celebrated in each and every corner of the world. No one knows for sure if it is because of the tradition or the amount of beer that is drank during this day.
Ironically, the first thing that resonates in my head when I hear about this country is the IRA. This is an Irish terrorist group that emerged in the 17th century as a result of the Plantation of Ulster. The group’s main goal is to connect the two Irish Countries into one, and completely cancel connections with the United Kingdom. This is an action of extreme patriotism. Thankfully, Scotland hasn’t undertaken such steps. If that happened the separation of both Scotland and Northern Ireland could be devastating for the United Kingdom.
I would be happy to express my personal experience with this country. But so far, I haven’t set foot on this land. I have only heard about it and the shared information leaves me cold and uninterested at the same time. I think in each and every country there is something beautiful to see and enjoy. On the separated sheet, it fully depends on the tastes of an individual.
