William Shakespeare

Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of England’s greatest writer and a true legend in the world of literature. William Shakespeare, a man of many literary faces, didn’t have a peaceful and painless life. His life journey was influenced by marriage to an older woman, death of his father, but most importantly, tragic death of his son. Even through the tough times, William managed to become the leading member of the Lord Chamberlain’s company and last but not least, he was successful enough to see his own plays being played in the Globe Theatre.

Shakespeare was a multitalented writer and the variety of his plays was vivid. That is why; his works are separated into phases. Phase one includes plays with a variety of different modes and an end-stopped blank verse, plays such as Richard III or The Taming of the Shrew are characterized by these. Phase two is known for its mature style and more flexible syntax and rhythm along with concentrated imagery, phase two includes among the others, Richard II and Julius Caesar. The so called problem plays are included in Phase 3; his most famous work Hamlet has characteristics of this phase, to be concrete, difficult interpretation. Phase 4 shows a fully developed style depicted in great tragedies such as Othello or Macbeth. Phase 5 ends Shakespeare’s legacy with romances which have little of the partial realism of the previous tragedies.

As I have mentioned, Hamlet is the best known out of many William’s works. The story follows the life of Hamlet, whose name is similar to the name of William’s by than, dead son, Hamnet. Hamlet finds himself in the castle of Elsinore, where his father was murdered. Throughout his investigation he blames everyone around for the crime; many characters in the play are victims of the anger which settled in his mind. At the end of the day, Hamlet is killed, but the death of his father is avenged. Hamlet is thought to be the play of the plays. The reason for this statement is that the concept of the play buries the antic traditions deep into the ground. It comes with original elements, before, completely unknown. More so, the literary device of play within a play is used in Hamlet, as one story is told during the action of another one.

Because of the difficulty of the interpretation, many theories have arisen during the work’s life. Religious interpretation expresses the work’s catholic, Ophelia’s burial ceremony, and protestant, location in Denmark, mixture. Philosophical approach finds many connections of Greek Sophists and existentialism in Hamlet’s thinking and actions. Psychoanalytic idea shows that Hamlet is full of hesitation but in reality the hesitation itself is not supported by logical facts; Sigmund Freud was the one to create the theory. Feminist view focuses on the gender system and the change Hamlet looks at his mother as a whore when she failed to remain faithful to Old Hamlet.

Because of its importance, Hamlet was both and inspiration and an influential marker for many to-be authors. Great example is Fielding’s Tom Jones, which borrows the “play within a play” from Shakespeare’s remarkable work. In addition, many of today’s works still draw inspiration from Hamlet, it can surely be said that William Shakespeare created dozens of unforgettable works, which makes him one of the greatest masterminds of all time.
