Jobs (topic, essay, vocabulary)

Work, so called job plays an important role in our lives. This way we do not only earn money but also find our place in society, spend time with other people and feel useful.

Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee. The employer is a person who hires employees. It can also be an institution. The employees receive wages for the work.

Choosing one’s careeris an important step in everybody’s life. Boys dream about professions such as pilots, astronauts, firemen or policemen. Girls on the other hand dream of becoming actresses, models, singers, teachers and so on. But as they get older and mature their criteria for choosing their profession become more and more realistic, because they have to coordinate their own interests, hopes and desires.

When we are young, we don’t think hard about our future job. Most of us want to be rich and famous. As we grow up, we become wiser and realize the importance of choosing our job. It is not easy to choose the right profession, especially at a young age. The time to make this final decision is during secondary school. We can do a manual job, which requires physical powers or a better-paid job that requires more qualifications. Professions like a lawyer, economist, manager, teacher and doctor require study on university. Some professions require certain qualities, others talent and creativity.

For the majority of people job means the source of earning money, for the others it can be a hobby. If they are talented then their work is their hobby, for example singers.
There are two main parts of jobs - This difference is also in education and in the salary. The salary usually depends on personal education and on the work experiences.

1. Physical: these people need physical power, energy and stamina (výdrž). They are specialized, education is at low level, for example builder, carpenter, farmer, fireman, butcher, miner. Some need special skills, for example waiters, cookers, watch-makers, shoemakers, hairdressers, car mechanics – they work in services, industry and agriculture.

2. Mental: they need high education, they are also better paid. And they don’t need physical skills, for example manager, officer (úradník), accountant, teacher, health care, judge, lawyer, politician.
From the point of sex there are typical jobs for men like truck driver, car mechanic, soldier, miner…and typical jobs for women like nurse, tailor, teacher – they have to be patient and reliable. Some women are in traditional jobs for men (police, army) and also men are in traditional women’s job (chef (kuchár), designer).

How do people search for jobs?
When you are looking for a job you can get information about jobs from: advertisement, internet, job agency/job centre, radio, TV, local cable TV, leaflets or from other people. When you want to apply for a job at first you have to write an application and you have to enclose your curriculum vitae. Then you are invited for an interview and you can be either accepted or refused. When you go for the interview it is important to be elegantly dressed, to have control of how you sit and what you do with your hands and also the eye contact is important. You should have prepared some questions for interviewer about the company. Curriculum vitae should contain your name, date of birth, place of birth, permanent address, nationality, marital status, telephone number, e-mail, education, work experience, other information, references, date and sign.

When I was little I wanted to be an actress. It was an interesting job for me too. Actresses are popular, they wear nice clothes and they have interesting lives. They travel a lot, they have lot of fans. And it was very interesting for me. After I finish school I would like to work accountant or secretary, because I will have a qualification. I like this job and I would like to get some new experience.

DANGEROUS JOBS:/nebezpečné zamestnania/
I think that among the dangerous jobs we can count for example miners. It is a dangerous job because miners can easily get injured or even killed in a mine. I think that firemen, policemen and rescue teams in the mountains have dangerous jobs too because they often have to risk their lives to save other people.

JOBS WHICH REQUIRE SPECIAL TALENT OR CHARACTER TRAITS /zamestnania, ktoré vyžadujú špeciálny talent alebo charakterové črty/:
For some jobs you need to have a special talent and determination. People like artists, photographers, designers and journalists can’t be successful if they are not talented. You need to have a good imagination, fantasy and a lot of creativity.
For some jobs, you need to have certain qualities or character traits. For example, if you want to become a doctor, you need:

THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE CHANGE JOBS:
Some young people can study what they want and later they can choose their own career. But not all of them. Many people must do the job they are offered. If they aren’t satisfied they decide to change their job. The main reasons are:

bad working conditions – zlé pracovné podmienky
a bad salary – they don’t earn enough money – zlý plat – nezarábajú dosť peňazí
an unpleasant and intolerant boss or colleagues – nepríjemný a netolerantný šéf alebo kolegovia
long working hours – dlhá pracovná doba
some people change their job when they get married because they move to a different place – a different town or a city– niektorí ľudia zmenia svoje zamestnanie, keď sa oženia /vydajú/, pretože sa musia presťahovať na iné miesto
you can be made redundant – prepustený z nadbytočnosti
you get a better job offer – dostaneš lepšiu pracovnú ponuku

THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE WORK:
People need to work because:
- they need money to cover our living costs – to buy food, to pay for electricity, to pay bills... – potrebujú peniaze, aby pokryli náklady na živobytie – aby kúpili jedlo, zaplatili elektrinu, aby zaplatili účty
- they want to make the most of their talent – chcú vyťažiť čo najviac zo svojho talentu
- for some people their job can also be their hobby - pre niektorých ľudí môže byť ich práca koníčkom
