The book – the friend of people (topic, essay, vocabulary)

People like reading books – it is one of the most favourite activities. We can buy books in a bookshop situated in big shopping centre or we can borrow them from a library. 

We can read books anywhere – at home, on the bus or train, at the doctors’… The books are a good source of information. Reading books can be fun when it is a hobby.

Our first books are usually read to us by our parents or grandparent. These are fairy tales or stories and the normally have more pictures than text. They take children to the word of fantasy. The children´s books by Hans Christian Andersen and the Brother Grimm ale popular worldwide.

Nowadays, people in Slovakia can read both original Slovak books and books translated from different languages, mainly English. Adults like to read detective stories, historical novels or books of travels. And young people like to read novel, romance and in school textbooks. It is becoming more and more popular to buy a book via the Internet in an Internet book shop. It also possible to read a book in electronic form, such a book is called an e-book.

Some people prefer to watch films. Reading book takes days or weeks, watching a film just one or two hours. Some people think that books will die out one day.

Literature can be divided into 2 categories:
a) NON-FICTION BOOKS

   NON-FICTION BOOKS /náučné knihy/ – they are usually for information. They can be divided into:

- Dictionaries

 - Encyclopedias

- Biographies

- Autobiographiesandmemoirs

- Travel books
- art books
- cookery books

FICTION BOOKS /beletria/ – there are 2 types of fiction books:
– POETRY /poézia/ – poems
– PROSE /próza/ – it contains:
-  fairy tale 

- Short stories
- westerns 
- science-fiction 
- crime/spy novels 
- romantic novels 
- historical novel 
- thrillers 

I like reading books. It is my favourite activity. I have read many books in my life. I prefer fiction books. Sometimes I read novels, especially romance novels that have a complicated plot because they are interesting. I don’t like crime novels – I think that they are boring.

There are many famous English writers. For example:
- William Shakespeare
- Charles Dickens
- Brőnte sisters
- Ernest Hemingway
- Oscar Wilde

There are many famous Slovak writers. For example:

• Ľudovít Štúr
• O. Hviezdoslav
• Chalupka
• Kukučín ..

My favourite book is April´s girl. It is a love story. I borrowed it from the library, when read this book two times this book my friend gave it to me. It is super, dramatic, romantic and very interesting book. Gist (hlavná myšlienka): Two young people fall in love. Their love is very big. They have very nice relationship, but departure men´s caused termination of relationship.
