Memento (Film Review)

Memento is a psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan, who is better known for his more recent movies such as Inception and The Dark Knight. It depicts the story of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a former claims investigator who is trying to find the rapist and killer of his wife, whom he only knows as a John G.

However, the most important thing about the main character which makes the movie so interesting is that he suffers from anterograde amnesia, a condition which renders him unable to create new memories. While he knows all about himself, he can only remember new things for a few minutes, and then forgets them. Using notes, tattoos and photographs, he struggles to find clues that will lead him to his revenge.

His condition is very cleverly reflected in the form of the movie, which is very unlike any other. It starts at the end, and then works its way back in small parts, each one unveiling a bit more of what led to the events that you’ve seen previously. This way, you can envision Leonard’s life much better, because, like him, you only see a part of the big picture. It makes the already intricate plot very confusing, but in a good way. Trust me when I say that you will watch it twice.

There is hardly anything wrong about Memento. The only weak link I can think of is the trailer, which is horrible. I’m glad that I didn’t see it before the movie, or I might have never watched it. It is truly a remarkable experience, and it will leave you thinking long after you’re done watching.
