Education – English Vocabulary, Phrases & Examples
Describe the system of education in Slovakia.
System of education: The general education in Slovakia is free of charge. But in most of the private schools you have to pay fees. School attendance in Slovakia is compulsory for children aged from 6 to 15 years.
Primary education: In Slovakia is primary education devided into two stages: the first stage (it´s from the first to the fifth class/grade), the second stage is from the sixth to the nineth class.
Secondary education: after primary school can pupils choose, which type of secondary school they want to attend for the next (usually) 4 years. In Slovakia there are many types of secondary schools. They can choose between gymnasium, or vocational and technical schools (agricultural, nursing, electro-technical, performing and fine arts, bussines/hotel academies)
Gymnasium offers general theoretical education and prepares students for higher education; some of them could be specialized in a specific subject (maths, languages...). Studium is 4 years long and finish with school-leaving examination (matricular examinations). It´s written exam (national standardized tests) and oral exam from 4 subject. Students who succesfully pass the examination will receive their school-leaving certificate and can apply for studies at universities and colleges. After graduation they can go and pass an entrance examination to be admited to university
Vocational/technical schools: prepare children for future professions and graduation is by passing final examinations in theoretical and practical subjects.
Universities: if you pass the entrance exam, you can go to a university. The university study takes from 4 to 6 years. When you successfully finish university, you get a diploma and you are awarded with a degree. For example: Bachelor’s Degree = Bc., Master’s Degree = Mgr
In Slovakia We have -primary school, highschool, university, gymnasium, catholic school, state school, private school, language school
The school year: in Slovakia starts on 2nd of September and ends in June /on the 30th of June/. We have 2 terms: a summer term and a winter term. In July and August we have holidays. We also have a few days off school in autumn, during Christmas and a week holiday in spring. We have on average 7 lessons a day. A lesson is 45 minutes long. Between the lessons we have breaks that are 5 or 10 minutes long. We also have a lunch break which is 30 minutes long. Students are evaluated by marks on the scale from 1 to 5-1 is the best and 5 is the worst
Describe ´the ideal school´
Each of us imagines one′s ideal school differently. I wish it was situated right in the centre of the city. The building should be modern. In the favourite school cantine just tasty meals would be cooked. There would be a swimming pool, own library in the school building. In every class there would be at least one computer and a sofa for comfortable spent breaks. There should be also many after-school activities -choir, drama class, photography and sport clubs or language courses. I would change some rules. For example I can imagine school without any school marks. Sometimes the marks are a big problem. Students are stressed out and afraid of having bad marks. I think that school education could be more practical. We should be prepared for the future job and career, for the university study. Sometimes we have to memorize too many things that we don’t really need in real life.
Find some advantages and disadvantages of student’s life.
Advantages: freedom (you set your own schedule, and can use your freetime however you want)
independence (get/make your own food and begin to learn how to take care of yourself as an adult)
education (you get to learn which will allow you to have a better job and a more stable life in the future)
exposure to diversity ( you get to live with people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. This prepares you for living in the real world where you will come into contact with these paople all the time)
Disadvantages: Students at secondary schools do not have a lot of free time, They need to prepare to school for exams, They need to get a pocket money from their parents -but sometimes spendings are so high and parents don‘t want to give them money so they need to find a part time job
Situation:Imagine you could choose your own English language programme. What kind of programme would you choose? Talk about the number of students in the class, the age of students, the number of lessons per week, work in groups with other students, use of textbooks, video, computer, etc.
Ideal English language course: The teacher should know-how to teach students a foreign language. Maximum number of students should be five people in the class. Students should know english at the same level. Age of students does not matter. Students should meet at least 6 hours a week. Students should use advanced gadgets and practical books.
