Slovak food: is based on many different kinds of soups, gruel, boiled and stewed vegetables, roast and smoked meats and dairy products. Cooking styles vary from region to region. The Slovak midday meal is the main meal of the day.

It is ussually a three-course meal which consists of a soup (clear: beef, chicken, vegetable) and thick (potato, fish, mushroom, cauliflower, tomato), the main course (roast pork with potato dumplings and cabbage or sauerkraut, fried pork chop with boiled potatoes or chips and a vegetable salad) and a dessert (fruit, plain or with whipped cream, ice cream).

Slovak beer, wine or any of the soft drinks (mineral water, coke, lemonade, juice or just soda) are served with it. The most popular Slovak spirits are a plum brandy called Slivovica, juniper brandy called Borovicka. Great Britain: In GB have 5 or 6 meals a day: breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea, dinner and later perhaps supper. Day begins with a cup of tea, then they have a breakfast. It starts with a cereal and milk or cream and sugar or porridge. This is followed by fried bacon and eggs, sausages, grilled tomatoes, spicy beans, kippers and toast with marmalade. In the middle of morning they have elevenses, which is usually a cup of coffee and biscuits.

Sometimes, often at weekends, when they get up later, they have brunch, a combination meal which is eaten for breakfast and lunch. At midday it is time for lunch. Lunch often consists of a hot dish (soup: clear (beef, vegetable, chicken) or thick (cream of tomato, cauliflower, mushroom), a salad, ham and cheese sandwiches, pizza, hamburgers and a dessert. The national dish is fish and chips or sausages and mashed potatoes. At about four o'clock it is teatime.

The traditional tea consists of thin slices of white or brown bread and butter with cheese, fish or ham, some vegetables, jam, cakes, fruit pies, biscuits and of course there are several cups of strong tea with milk. USA: The American's don’t have a national dish because it is a very multicultural country –their cuisine contains food from different parts of the world: Indian, Chinese, food and so on. The American's favourite meat is beef. American cuisine is considered as the most unhealthily. America is well-known as country of hamburgers, chips, hot dogs, grilled chicken, peanut butter and other fat meals. Americans love fast food. The American specialty is also muffins or pancakes with maple syrup for breakfasts, which wash down with juice or milk

Describe the advantages/disadvantages of eating in restaurants and at home. What kinds of restaurants do you know?

Restaurants: In restaurants we order our food and drink from the menu. Typical menus offer a starter (soup, salad), a main course (meat, fish, pizza, pasta) and a desert (pancake, tiramisu, creme caramel). When people have a formal lunch or dinner they often start by drinking an aperitif and then during eating they drink wine, beer or non alcohol drinks (juice, coca-cola, sparkling or still mineral water). In top restaurants the desert is the most important dish and also the most expensive -service by waiter/waitress, he brings menu cards

Home: Kinds of restaurants: We can cook our food at home; we can buy ready to eat food in supermarkets which need to be heated in the oven or microwave, we can have a take away or delivery. Usually we have to eat out, in a restaurant, a cafeteria, a snack bar, a fast food restaurant, or just at a refreshment stall in the street. People can choose from a wide range of eating places when they want to eat out. The busiest places tend to be ‘burger bars’, ‘pizzerias’ and other ‘fast food outlets’

What special meal would you offer a foreigner visiting your country?

“Bryndzové halušky” (gnocchi with sheep cheese) is considered to be a Slovak tradition meal -it is food made from potatoes mixed with cheese. But our national foods are also patties stuffed with sheep cheese, pancakes made of potato dough-baked directly on the stove and stuffed with filling of duck liver or steamed jam-filled dumplings topped with poppy seeds or nuts. Slovaks like to eat meat, usually pork, beef or poultry with potatoes or rice.

Situation: You are in the Italian restaurant. Ask for the table, menu, order something to eat and drink. Ask the waiter to recommend you a speciality of the restaurant. Finally ask for the bill and pay for it.
