Clothing & Fashion – English Vocabulary, Phrases & Examples

Give the brief history of clothing in the past. Compare it to present.

In previous centuries women’s and men’s clothes were totally different. People used natural materials, clothes weren’t so colorful as at present and was handmade. Women wore long skirts, long-sleeved dresses, wore corsets, gloves, hats and lots of accessories. Nobility wore wigs. Women had long hair usually hidden under hats. Men’s clothes didn’t change very much- men wore trousers, shirts and jackets. Shoes were made only of leather. Nowadays there’s a wide range of colorful clothes made of different kinds of material. Women wear trousers and jeans. People wear tattoos, piercings and dye their hair. People wear brand clothes. Fashion is repeated. Many fashion trends last just one season.

What do you wear on the following occasions: going to a friend’s party, to the theatre, to the wedding reception, on a long car journey, lying on the beach and at a cold windy night?

When we go to a concert or to the theatre we prefer to wear an evening dress, which consists of a dark suit, a light shirt with cuff links and a tie or a bow-tie, vest, sometimes a dinner jacket, dark shoes, an evening gown, court shoes and accesories (handbag, jewellery, necklace, bracelet, brooch, ring), perfume

When people go to a disco they wear clothes in which they are more uncover. Men wear trousers and T-shirts and women wear miniskirts/party dress, T-shirts/top with big colletage, jeans, interest accessories and stronger make-up (mascara, powder, lipstick, eye shadow..)

On the wedding reception women wears elegant dress (short or long), beautiful hairstyle and make-up, mens dark suit

When we go on a log car journey, we wear a comfortable clothing

When we lying on the beach: In summer we wear light summer dresses such as: loose blouses, T-shirt, shorts or bermuda shorts. On our feet we put on sandals, slippers or sneakers/trainers. When we go swimming we put on a swimming suit (one-piece or two-piece) and sometimes we take a straw hat.

In a cold windy night we need to wear something warm: trousers, jeans, cardigans, polo neck sweater, anorak and parkas, winter coats and jackets, sometimes even a fur coat, gloves or mittens, caps, hats, scarf and winter boots of course.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of wearing a uniform? What sort of people wear uniform?

It is still a tradition in some schools in Britain (mostly private ones) to wear a school uniform. It usually consists of a white shirt and grey or dark trousers and a dark sweater or blazer with a school badge on the breast pocket and perhaps a cap . The girl’s dress since it consists of a plain coat, a blouse and a skirt in some dark colour, such as grey, navy blue or brown.

– The argument for uniforms is that they prevent competition among the girls and hide differences in family incomes.

Situation: You are in a clothes shop and you are looking for a blouse to go with your new jacket. Ask the shop assistant for help and buy a blouse.
