The Fairy Ring

Oh, have you seen the fairies dance
Upon a Summer’s night?
And watched the gnomes and pixies prance
Where’er the moon is bright?
’Tis splendid fun to see them run
As soon as it grows light.

One evening sister May and I
Went out soon after ten;
The moon hung like a ball on high
Above the fairy glen,
And round and round upon the ground
Danced fays and elfin men.

And then, at dawn, they leave behind
A ring of toadstools wee
(Where they have danced you’ll always find
This mark for folks to see),
Then off they fly into the sky
Just as the clock strikes three.

The kites

Up in the air
See the kites fly,
Like coloured birds
In the wind-whipped sky.

I wish I were small
And light as air,
I would climb on a kite
And sail up there.

Then I’d drift upon
The paper wings
And hear the songs
That the wild wind sings.

What fun it would be
To look right down –
Over the park
And the rooftops of town.

The people below
Would stand and stare
And wish they were me
High, high in the air.

And never stops at all.

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I still search
for you in crowds,
in empty fields
and soaring clouds.

In city lights
and passing cars,
on winding roads
and wishing stars.

I wonder where
you could be now,
for years I’ve not said
your name out loud.

And longer since
I called you mine—
time has passed
for you and I.

But I have learnt
to live without,
I do not mind—
I still love you anyhow.

One Day I’ll Be

Today at school my teacher said,
I wonder what you’ll be?
When time has passed and you’ve grown up,
And the world is yours to see.

Right then and there I stood straight up,
And looked her in the face.
And said with pride and confidence,
I plan to live in space.

Like pirates of so long ago,
My ship will take me far.
Around the moon and back again,
And to a distant star.

So when you talk about the world,
And say it’s yours to see.
I believe I’ll have the greatest view,
Upon the cosmic sea.

the snow and me.
I smile inside.

My handprint

Here is my handprint,
Five fingers in all,
Outside they are short,
But the middle is tall.

You will find them on windows,
You can find them on the wall,
They will make a big mess,
For something so small.

One day I will grow,
And leave them no more,
My hand prints will be missed,
Of that, I am sure.

So here is one now,
That you can’t wipe away.
My present to you,
This Mothers’ Day.
