Music enriches our lives from an early age. Small children sing songs at school and often learn to play an instrument at music school. Many of them learn to play the piano or a string instrument, such as the violin or violoncello. Other children learn to play a wind instrument, such as the recorder, the flute or the clarinet or they play an accordion. Talented children hold recitals or performances in front of an audience, where they can perform their musical skills. As children grow to teenagers, their tastes often change. Many young people crave fast beats and driving music, expressing the latest musical styles. Some teenagers learn to play the guitar, the electric guitar, the drums or the keyboard. They form their own bands and dream of one day becoming famous stars. Many teens also like to dance. They take dancing lessons and go to the dance parties, discos or clubs.

Music plays an important role in the cultural life of cities and towns. Many large cities have their own symphonic orchestras with world renowned conductors. Some cities have large beautiful concert halls and opera houses, and hold music festivals. Concertgoers can enjoy church, organ and chamber music, operas, operettas and musicals. Jazz fans go to jazz clubs for good jazz and blues music. The city stadiums are the places where famous pop and rock stars hold their concerts. People also like to listen to music on the radio at home where they can choose from a variety of music on the different radio stations. On TV, people can watch music programmes like MTV or VIVA and live concerts. Of course, people can go to the music store to buy their own cassettes, records and CDs.

We can divide music on two main groups - serious music and popular music. Serious music involves classical music and styles based on classical instruments. Everybody knows classical composers like Johan Sebastian Bach, who wrote many Fugues, Antonio Vivaldi, who wrote The four seasons, Ludwig van Beethoven and his Fatal Symphony Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose music composition are for example Magical Flute, Figaros wedding and The Small Night Music and many and many other. Under popular music we sort all modern styles from rock over pop to techno. The biggest boom took music down in 20th century, when many of today’s styles arose.

The beginning of jazz music dates back to 19th century, when millions of black people were transported from Africa to the Caribbean and America to work as slaves for the European colonists there. Little original African music survived in the traditional form in the new world. In the Latin America countries some African music survived thanks to slaves, who were allowed to maintain their culture. In these countries, many new styles of music arose - in Latin America merengue, in the Caribbean tango, in South America salsa, bolero, rumba and samba. African songs slowly evolved into blues. Did you know that jazz was originally dance music? African-American dance music was kept alive in form of rhythm and blues. After jazz and rock & roll, R&B was the most influential fusion, but as it spread all over the world, it soon became ´white´ music.

Now I want to say something about development of music in 20th century. First significant progress was in ‘50s, when rock & roll began in America. In this era was born one of the biggest music stars ever, Elvis Presley. In the ‘60s became much popular two different bands from Great Britain - the Rolling stones and the Beatles. ‘60s were also time of flower-power and protests against the war in Vietnam. In this time was found one of the most known rock festivals Woodstock. The ‘70s belongs mainly to styles pop represented by Abba and Punk rock represented by Sex pistols. In ’80s were born still more stars in all styles (Madonna, U2, Depeche Mode, Sting). Big boom took down hard rock, which brought wild power to music scene and bands like Van Halen, Kiss or Iron maiden became legends. In ‘90s began decline of music and continue to nowadays, because mass media converted music only to a business article and quality music can we now find mostly only in small independent labels.

I like dance music - it’s a common term of many styles of electronic music, which are recorded on discos - for example eurodisco, trance, house, rave and so on. My favourite group is German rave band Scooter. This famous group consist of three members - band-leader and vocalist H.P. Baxxter, keyboard player Rick Jordan and since 2002 DJ Jay Frog. Scooter was founded by H.P. and Rick Jordan in year 1994. Already their second single “Hyper! Hyper!” became worldwide super hit and Scooter was catapulted among biggest dance stars. In year 1998 join the group DJ Axel Coon and began in my opinion the best era of this German trio. Singles “How Much Is the Fish” and “Call Me Mañana” captured whole dance-world and since this time is Scooter considered to be the best dance group of the world. Two years ago when Scooter was “on the top” Jay Frog changed Axel Coon and also their music changed a little bit. Scooter is now still big name in the world of dance music, but his best years are irrecoverable away.

Scooter got out so far 10 LP-records - And The Beat Goes On…, Our Happy Hardcore, Wicked!, Age Of Love, No Time To Chill, Back To The Heavyweight Jam, Sheffield, We Bring The Noise, Push The Beat For This Jam and latest The Stadium Techno Experience and three Best of albums - Rough & Tough & Dangerous, Encore - Live And Direct and 24 Carat Gold. Characteristic their music is especially H.P. Baxxter’s gruff and “screaming” voice, simple strain and melody with techno basis and fast beats.
